It's been a strange, rough couple of months for our intrepid villagers — Bunkers, superpowers and clones, oh my! Perhaps the Observers are sympathetic to their plight, or maybe they just have a peculiar sense of humor. At any rate, they've set up a gathering space chalk full of summer camp goodness, no strings attached. Not that anyone knows that part.

Just before sunset, a cheery message pops up on wrist devices all across the settlement and beyond. The instructions seem simple enough, although one does have to wonder at what dubious gift awaits them all after everything is said and done.

Marshmallows are on the house, so grab yourself a stick, strap on a sash and get to roasting, villagers. Skinny dipping, sing-alongs and friendship bracelets optional.

It's only been a couple of weeks since the fraught discovery of the underground bunker, and it's far from giving up all of its secrets. The cold, industrial concrete of the walls and floors, the computer consoles, the abandoned labs all speak to a peek behind the curtain, but how far this rabbit hole goes is anyone's guess.

In the coming weeks, more will be revealed for those bold enough to seek it: Blocked pathways cleared, stuck doorways foisted opened onto the strange and disturbing. So really, just another day for our villagers.

POWER PLAY

In one of the smaller rooms resides a machine, pieced together from what seems to be spare parts, awkwardly made but functional. Boot it up and in the center of the hodgepodge a screen will flicker to life; on it, a list of abilities and a timeframe. Make a choice, follow the instructions to tap your wrist device to the adjacent sensor pad, and see what comes of it.

HOW ALARMING

Behind another door, a seemingly innocuous, inert computer console — But boot this one up and our intrepid explorers are faced with a prompt: IMMINENT DANGER ALARM ACTIVATION. After everything that's happened in recent weeks, maybe a little warning might not be the worst idea.

Everybody else, cover your ears. A test of the alarm is happening in 1, 2, 3...

PAST & PENDING

In a room with walls covered in multi-color flame insignias resides yet another seemingly-harmless computer console. When turned on, the screens display lists, numbered iterations with name upon name. Some are very familiar. Some are corrupted and difficult to make out. Few of them are particularly comforting.

Deep under the mountain, tucked away in the newly-discovered bunker complex, there is a room where everyone begins. It is filled with equipment — Computer consoles, monitors — but the point of it all resides within ten vertical stasis tubes lined neatly along a far wall.

One of them has been cracked and lies dormant, dry. In six of the remaining are bodies, unconscious and floating in their familiar vari-colored scrubs, vital signs ticking calmly off on their respective readouts.

In the corner, near the cracked tube, the ceiling has shattered and tumbled inward, across the floor and over the largest console in the room — The one flashing 24 HOURS UNTIL STASIS FAILURE.

ON THE NETWORK/LAKESIDE

The little escapade underground has left Steph with an odd sense of anxiety and a newfound appreciation for the open air. She can't quite put her finger on what unsettled her, but she knows that as long as the pod is out here in the open she and Bull aren't going to be the only ones to step inside and see what happens. If it's going to be a whole Thing then they may as well compile notes. That means letting people know, and that means posting to the village twitter. She sits on a rock at the edge of the lake and composes her message.

August 7th - The Mill

After spending a few days hanging out around Danny, learning bits of things here and there, he took a day to explore the mill near his house. The door left open as he made his way around inside looking at the workings off the place. He had the basic idea of what a mill was used for from history books but the place had been why he chose his house. IT could be useful, but first he would have to figure out how the place really worked, or if anyone was actually using it.

August 8th - Around the Village.
Vergil was dressed in the pants he had gotten at the party, and his teal boots. His hair was styled again, and he felt a lot better about how he looked, the new teal button up was hanging half open over a white stained shirt from the pack he arrived with. He lacked the journal he was usually scribbling in when he was out and about in the village. He looked a little lost at times before heading any which direction. Without his journal he was learning the village again, he kind of knew where things were thanks to the landmarks he had jotted down, but he had loaned it to Kat while he went out.

He wasn't seeking Danny today, just looking to see what he could either help with, or learn from. He was still headstrong about becoming self sufficant... but he took a lot of care to avoid the Inn.

The fourth of August dawns pleasantly mild and clear, with hardly a cloud in the sky. Which is good, because it means there's plenty of sunshine to see the riot of color that has errupted on the front lawn of the inn.

The general set-up will be familiar to those who've been in the village long enough — Tables and chairs from inside the inn set up outside for a party by the time everyone wakes. This party, though, seems to have been turned up to about 11, and the theme is definitely new: Balloons, streamers, party favors, and everything in a rainbow of colors that villagers have come to know extremely well.

Each place is set with its own (occasionally large) goody bag and birthday present, each in the color belonging to the owner on the tag. One place, done up all in silver and gray, is set for the lost.

The tables are piled high with the sort of fare you'd find at a children's party: Cake, soda, hamburgers, pizza. Not a beer or cup of coffee in sight. And on the edge of the lawn, beside an area possibly kept clear for dancing, is the most bewildering, magical thing of all, no pocket change needed.

Tuck in and let loose, villagers. If you're lucky, maybe someone will spike the punch.

AUGUST 2nd [ARRIVAL & INN]

Water pulsed and Kat felt herself being lifted. Her arm had been broken, her body bruised and her heart shattered. The first two injuries had been wrought by Mundus, a demon of pain and torture, but the other… That had come from someone close to her. Someone she had loved. Someone she still loved.

I'm sorry.

Her throat began to burn as her body struggled for air. The push lifted her higher and when she reached the surface of the fountain she gasped, coughing as she fought to open her eyes. Kat remembered the comfort and strength of Dante's arm as it curled around her slim shoulders but nothing after that. Her feet kick beneath her, pushing her towards the fountains edge. She used one arm to lift herself and the backpack from the water, never noticing that her other arm wasn't broken anymore.

Waves splashed onto the stone.

Kat sat and stared at the village around her. She focused on breathing, on clearing her thoughts, and remaining calm. This wasn't the first time she'd found herself in a strange place though it didn't have the same feeling as Limbo.

After taking a moment to get her bearings and catch her breath, Kat rose and headed towards the inn. She didn't know that it was a central location in the village or some kind of important landmark but she had noticed the curling gray tendrils of smoke rising from the chimney. Out of everywhere in the village, it was her best bet.

Once inside she inspected the walls, the notes and then found a place next to the fire to sit and dry off. Her backpack ended up leaning against the far side of the hearth. Kat wasn't too worried about it or its contents. She sat in front of the fire, her legs curled to her chest, her thoughts tumbling uncomfortably into loosely formed theories and questions.

She would survive. She always survived, even if she didn't have a clear reason to survive anymore.

AUGUST 2rd [NIGHT AROUND HOUSE 48]

Kat's conversation with Vergil had gone better than she would have expected. The confrontation felt like it had happened two days ago though there was no mark left on her body. His words back then, they had cut her, but Kat wanted to give him a chance and she truly thought that he had that chance here. He was human now. He was working. He was more than a man with two lives and a hidden agenda. That didn't mean that Kat didn't think that Vergil was scheming but that she wanted to support his efforts.

It hurt. She didn't want to admit how much he had hurt her but she was used to pain.

She wouldn't let her pain rule her.

Kat held the small note in her palm as she looked for the correct house. It'd been a code, as expected of Vergil, but Kat had worked with Vergil long enough to have figured out what he had meant without too much difficulty. She had brought her backpack with her, having no other place to put it, and had collected some items that she would need from the inn. Now she had to find Vergil's home.

It would have helped if he hadn't just given her a piece of paper with a number on it.

Darkness covered the village like a veil with the bright moon illuminating Kat's wandering path. She continually looked down at the small piece of paper, looking incredibly lost while trying to recall the map she'd seen at the inn. When she reached the mill she knew that she'd gone too far, turned around and continued her search.

The urgent warnings come from villagers returning south from the lake: a creature twice the size of a man, antlered and voracious. Larger than any they've seen on the plains, stalking its way to the main village. Some might have their own names for this hunger in a skin of shadow; others might remember that it was the first to claim a life, in their village's short history.

Whatever context one has for it, best to secure all pets and loved ones before it arrives. With weapons and food stores at the inn, the call goes out to gather — And to bring back any tools, because there's no telling what doors and windows can do to stop such a creature.

The Inn
Waking in the morning, Vergil set about gathering up the few things he had. More people had arrived since he had, and despite knowing the Inn was the best place to be, namely with his lack of survival skills. He was a loner by nature and the inn was just to full for his liking. The journal he had grabbed up on the day of the quake shoved in his bag with the rest of the things he arrived with in the bag.

He left the door cracked, to make sure it was clearly vacant now, moving down the steps quickly, stopping long enough to get something to eat to tide him over for awhile. Not being able to have whatever he wanted just delivered really sucked. Even pizza sounded like a heavenly gift now after the past week or so.

Around House 48 and the Mill
Vergil had walked around the village, as he had tried to do each day, but the rains and the quake had hindered his plans mostly. He had made his way around looking at empty houses, not going in just looking for something aesthetically pleasing. As if that even mattered in the situation he had found his life in of late. Some habits were hard to break.

Even his old base for the Order had been beautiful in its decay. So when he wandered his way across the water to the Mill, he found a small group of houses past the mill. It was a house with red brick and blue trim that called to him. Walking up the steps it was easy to tell this place was unoccupied. He held tighter to the backpack over his shoulders and made his way on up through the yard pushing the door open, the months and months on months and months of dust fluttered around, he sneezed loudly at that but left the door open. The first thing he did was walk around and open all the windows. It was hard to turn off the voice in the back of his mind screaming open windows invite robbers... but really? This wasn't Limbo City, and it sure had nothing worth stealing.

The door stayed open left the backpack on the porch and went in search of anything he could use to get the dust up, no broom in sight he did however find linens and stupidly decided to use one of the sheets to try to clean the dust up with it. It quickly got dirty as could be. A pillow case came next to start cleaning some of the furniture. Every now and then he would have to step outside and start sneezing loudly. Being human sucked. It wasn't fair that he had to clean, he was almost tempted to go back to the inn, but he had already committed to the idea.

Before the sun set he had found a way to beat the dust out of the mattress after stripping it and the pillows. All the linens needed washed but he was to tired to care. A month ago he would have judged himself. Sleeping on a dusty bare bed sounded more like something Dante would do than himself. He wanted a shower as well, but he wasn't sure how well he trusted the running water yet, the house had a long way to go, and the dark of the night felt a lot more noticeable by himself, still he was exhausted so sleep came quickly.

After morning came, he gave the plumbing a shot, changing into his spare scrubs after a quick cold bath. His reflection in the dirty mirror almost disappointed him, but an idea struck. Running down to the kitchen he looked around. The kitchen had dishes, and other things. He hurried down through the yard once he found the largest pan, taking the dirty bed clothes with him, though he had no soap yet, he tried his best to get some of the filth off the sheets. It made his arms ache pulling the wet sheets out and wringing them, throwing the wet pillow cases in the pan. With wet sheets over his arms folded enough to keep them from dragging. He made his way back from the river. He looked at the mill a moment, tipping his head to the side. Another idea forming but for now he had a house to clean and a survival manual to read.

It was mid afternoon when he gave up for awhile and could be found sitting on the front porch with the sheets hanging off the porch's rails, and the Army survival manual in hand, reading quietly. The house still had a lot of work it needed, and he needed to figure out how to clean the gutters and check and see if the furnace could be cleaned, but for a spoiled rich kid, he was pretty proud of what he had gotten done even if his clothes were filthy. The stolen journal from the inn's storage room was open next to him as he quietly jotted notes.

WARNINGS: Violence and injury in the narrative

A moment ago (or maybe it was hours, who could even tell anymore?) Steph would have told you she was dead. It seemed obvious. She'd been fighting for hours before she was captured, throwing herself against enemy after enemy in a desperate attempt to get things under control. Then she'd been in the hands of a sadist for... days? Weeks? A lifetime. Getting shot in the chest was just icing on the cake. Definitely dead, she would have told you.

Now she burst through the water's surface with a gasp like a quiet scream. There was only one thought in her head: If I'm alive, I want to stay that way. She dragged herself to the edge of the fountain with sheer desperation, certain she was still in the clutches of the Black Mask.

[ Later ]

The inn was like something out of a movie. Then again, Steph’s experience with hotels was pretty limited to Gotham City shitholes where criminals go to hide. She tried not to think about that as she hugged the peacoat tight around herself next to the fire. It probably wasn’t the best look for a girl, staring blankly into a fire, huddled in a coat on a warm summer evening, but her black scrub top was still drying next to her. And besides, the warmth was comforting after a frankly harrowing however-long-it-was.

She didn’t shy away from company, she just didn’t seek it out either. She seemed more adrift than anything. She wasn’t sure where she wanted to go or what she wanted to do.

[MINGLE] Great Shakes

The sun is still high when the earth begins its initial, almost benign sway, but seasoned villagers know well enough that what follows will be far from gentle. Vibrations ramp up swiftly, exponentially, until within the space of a few seconds, the whole world is shaking — Dishes pinging down from shelves, young trees sifting free of the earth, shingles dislodging and tumbling like rain.

After 20 seconds, the worst is done, and after 30 the shaking has ebbed completely. Some will have escaped relatively unscathed, but others will not have been so lucky...

...and the aftershocks are still to come.

Arrival Day; Fountain - One volunteer for fountain, otherwise OTA

In the midst of it happening, Logan felt the feeling of déjà vu; his mind remembering the sensation of water surrounding. But given his very last memories of what had occurred and the whirlwind of anger and pain and confusion of a place and people he shouldn't know but did make his arrival a rather loud one.

He grunts while trying to catch his breath and looks around with a defensive look that conveyed that the man was clearly unpredictable and needed to be approached with caution, though it doesn't take too long for him to finally get on his feet and take a look around with something of familiarity.

Later in the evening, he could be found sitting on the step of his newly claimed house trying to collect his thoughts and figure out the past, present and what was going on in his future. As well as where his last visit to the settlement fit into it all.

Around and at the Inn - OTA

Any kind of rest didn't include much sleep. As always, he woke up after a nightmare, metal claws out and shredded sheets on either side of him. This time, he was letting out a pained holler when they didn't. There was only intense pressure that made both hands ache like they never had before.

So he grabs the white shirt that he'd changed into earlier that day and sets out for a walk, eventually ending up at the inn where he grumbles through making a cup of something and sits down.

He could really use a cigar and a glass of something strong right now.

The Fountain, July 9th*
Vergil couldn't pin when he realized he was in water, but the moment he did he started kicking upwards. His lungs burned by the time he reached the top, a gasping breath escaped him. The need for air as powerful as the need to get out of the strange fountain. He hauled himself over the edge, his scrubs covered knees hitting the ground as he started coughing up the water he breathed in. His hair darkened by the water was hanging in his face as he tried to breath, sitting on his knees, fists against the ground.

It took a few moments before three things became very clear; one, it was raining, two, these were not his clothes, and three, this was not where he had meant to teleport to. His hand shot up to his neck, it only took a second before he realized his pendent was missing.

Sitting up Vergil ran a hand through his hair to get it out of his face. Looking around at the little park he appeared to be in. Looking back towards the fountain he lifted his hand again to try and open a new portal... when nothing happened his eyes widened. "Oh no..." His powers hadn't failed him yet. Looking around as dread started to weigh in, he choose to figure out what was going on before he let a panic truly set in.

Better to focus on whatever this was, than the ache in his heart.

The Inn, evening July 9th
After being brought to the inn and listening to the one that found him, he found himself sitting at a table looking over the record book. All of his plans were ruined and he was upset but a task to focus on was just what the doctor ordered. He had a lot of questions but he didn't want to bother anyone yet... Being surrounded by so many people after what had happened houses before just made it all the more real. This was a new place, a new chance, and a means to forget the betrayals for now.

Anytime he heard footsteps he would look up and weakly smile. His heart wasn't in it right now but he knew networking was always the smartest start to any venture.

The Inn, July 10th
The night before had been interesting to say the least. Learning what he could about his new home before retiring and claiming an empty room of the inn. Waking up he could feel the static in his hair, he felt so different without the power coursing through him. Was this how Kat... hell any human felt? He was stiff and still tired, but the sun was up and he needed to get more information. He moved over looking in the mirror, a bit of black stubble peppering his face, but there was nothing he could do about that for now. He would worry in a day or so. Sometimes he hated how his stubble didn't match his hair, but genetic's were a pain.

He made his way down the stairs, the scrub pants had dried by now so he had them and the t-shirt on. Leaving the rest upstairs. His platinum hair was pushed back but without product it had a mind of its own, a slight static-y curl going on. He hated looking so unkept but what else could he do? He moved over to start skimming the records book again. Figuring he should see what everyone else did around here.

Sixth Itheration Village.
He set out of the inn around noon, taking a moment to memorize the way the inn looked, hoping to be back by sunset. He headed out walking off towards more buildings. Taking note of anything he passed of interest. He didn't have any paper so it was all mental notes but for now he had no idea what else to do. Survivalist wasn't one of his skills. Take down an evil demon king, sure any day... survive in the world without tech or money... nope. He had to find someone or something to busy his time with least he let himself fall into a funk which would make everything worse. His mind kept replaying the look on Dante's face as he stabbed him through the heart, and the sound of Kat, of all people, begging Dante to let him live... He took them both in, gave them a home and a purpose... and they betrayed him. Death would have been kinder. No, alas death wasn't in his cards yet. Despite the dull ache in his heart every time he thought of his brother and the girl he pressed on.

Out of sight, out of mind.

He had a world to explore and learn. Maybe this was a fine new start, even if the weather was dreadful. He did not yet know that he could get sick, the idea had never crossed his mind. Human ailments weren't a nephilim's problem.
