It's an unfamiliar sensation, this. Gratitude? Some kind of twisting discomfort with having been seen like this, even as he feels relieved at Vanille's understanding, and can let his hackles down. The people back in Andromeda had been a strange mix: underhanded criminals who'd joined the Initiative for a chance to outrun their debts and problems, or dewy-eyed optimists who'd come for the promise of science and a new galaxy and a new frontier. Even amongst the other outlaws, though, they'd mostly never stopped to offer each other support like this.

This acceptance. That's new.

"Maybe the Observers self-select for pragmatists," he says after a pause, a dry laugh. Honestly, who knows how they choose who comes to this village, or who came to this shrine.

At that thought, Reyes turns his attention towards their surroundings and trying to understand where they are. And for a moment it's almost like he's just glossed it over and chosen to pretend their unfortunate memories never happened; before he adds, finally, quietly, "I do appreciate it, Vanille."

Vanille just smiles at him, patting his arm and giggling lightly in response, her way of adding levity to the mood. "Of course."

Nothing else really needs to be said. This experience with these three other people is a lot like what happened on Cocoon. Sometimes people really do just need to go through hell together to make bonds that last. These people here are stuck with her now, whether they like it or not. And maybe that's part of the reason they were brought here.
