"Sounded like everyone was rared up and ready to go, at least." Those inspirational speeches at the end there. Not a skill he had, but his ex-girlfriend had been really, really good at them; had once had them broadcasted all over an entire galaxy, rallying so many disparate peoples to her cause.

"Do you think it's your-- future, then? Your future, if you weren't here?"

(Or maybe even what her original self was still undergoing. But Reyes tried not to put too much thought into the clone theory if he could avoid it.)

Vanille nods in response. That was the good thing about those Cocoon friends. They were all pretty good at inspirational speeches. After letting go of the anger driving her, Lightning became one of the best. Vanille would follow her to the ends of the world if it came down to it.

"Yeah. I think it's what we were just about to do." That makes the most sense to her. They were all ready to fight Barthandelus and protect Orphan before she came here. Maybe this is what really happened. "So I guess we won't really be able to protect Orphan the way we wanted to. But maybe we can still save Cocoon. We just have to survive all of this first."

And if Lightning's inspirational speech is anything to go by, if the fact that her family all survived being turned Cie'th and back again, then they will survive. They have to.

"I still can't pretend to understand everything of what was happening there, but for what it's worth, I-- hope it works out."

Sometimes Reyes offers platitudes, token niceties like this, but this time it isn't actually false. This girl had seemed a merely useful connection at first, but Vanille is genuinely sweet, and had been kind to him; had chosen to look past his own glaring flaws. That deserves some kindness in return.

"Thanks," Vanille says in reply, offering a small but grateful smile along with it. No one else really knows what's at stake, what all of this fal'Cie and l'Cie and Cie'th nonsense really is, and that's okay. They all seem to care in their own ways and that means a lot to her. "Well... if I ever go back, I'll let you know how it goes!"

It's an optimistic little promise from the girl -- Reyes hasn't been pinning his hopes on being able to go back, though he'd very much like to, since Kadara had become a kind of home -- and how in the world would she even pass the message back to him if so?

But those aren't the right questions, and perhaps it's just the kind of joke you make to keep laughing rather than crying, so he just shoots her a smile instead. "Keep me posted," he says. as if she could.
