Well, he knows what names mean to Natasha, doesn't he? Sometimes they're everything, and sometimes they're nothing. She has only ever used it during moments where things are...maybe a little more tense. Moments when she needs to be reminded that they know each other. And maybe she's smiling faintly, too, then, dry and more than a little humorless, but still--a smile.

"It really doesn't, does it? Honestly, if they were trying for a stress test, I'd really prefer a treadmill. Or maybe live fire." They're going to have to get back after this, and while she knows they can manage, what this place had showed them all...it's not all going to be easy. Not for everyone.

"Outrunning a firing squad," Rhodey says. "Great British Baking Bake-off style thing. I would much rather fail at making an éclair." The fail part goes without saying.

"I think there are some people who might want to rather stay right where they are," he says quietly. "Don't know if I blame them for that, either."

Natasha sighs at those words, and her shoulders settle slightly. Yeah. Yeah, he's probably not wrong. It might be easier, to stay someplace like this, even with everything going on here. Even being someone else's guinea pig.

"I don't, either. But you know I can't be one of them. I can't know there's a problem and not try to fix it. Guess that makes me as bad as the rest of them, huh?" Just as much a hero. God. She's spent too much time with Steve, is what this is.

Life as a guinea pig isn't necessarily a hard life. But it's all you are, you aren't making your own decisions. Even if you're allowed to make your own choices, it's within a limited framework. You're a psychology experiment, and there are plenty of stories about how those can go.

"I can't either," he says. "We need to get back, as bad as it is back home."
