It's been a strange, rough couple of months for our intrepid villagers — Bunkers, superpowers and clones, oh my! Perhaps the Observers are sympathetic to their plight, or maybe they just have a peculiar sense of humor. At any rate, they've set up a gathering space chalk full of summer camp goodness, no strings attached. Not that anyone knows that part.
Just before sunset, a cheery message pops up on wrist devices all across the settlement and beyond. The instructions seem simple enough, although one does have to wonder at what dubious gift awaits them all after everything is said and done.
Marshmallows are on the house, so grab yourself a stick, strap on a sash and get to roasting, villagers. Skinny dipping, sing-alongs and friendship bracelets optional.

"But you're doing better? I haven't seen you at the house, I was hoping that was a good sign." Kat kind of missed Stephanie being there but she was happy that the other woman had things handled.
no subject
"Maybe. But I think it's also an end." They couldn't date, not with that kind of feeling between them. And it breaks her heart because she really loves Tim, but it's still not as bad as she expected.
"I've been okay. About the same as normal. You know I was only trying to hide because he was from home, right? And I... sorta forgot for a minute that nobody knows where I live."
no subject
Kat's dark emerald eyes glistened with warmth. "That's true. I don't know where you live." She paused thoughtfully.
"How did you know where Vergil and I lived?" Kat hadn't remembered seeing Stephanie around the house at any time before she crawled through the attic window.
no subject
"Actually, he told me to stop by any time if I wanted to talk."
no subject
"I'm glad he did." She wanted to be there for the people she cared about.
Kat's eyes dropped down to the bracelet around her wrist before rising her gaze back to Stephanie's. "Have you done a lot tonight?"
no subject
"Hmm? Oh, no, not really. I'm just sort of hanging out. You?"
no subject
Kat had never gotten to do things like this in the past.
no subject
"I think for campfires you're usually supposed to tell scary stories, but... all of my scary stories are true? So we can probably ignore that rule."
no subject
"Do you want to start?"
no subject
"You'd better go first," she decides, still wracking her brain for ideas.

"There was a traveler. He didn't have a destination in mind but he was searching for something. He was kind and giving. He met a stranger along the road who was old and their shoes worn. The old stranger ask the traveler for his shoes and with a smile the traveler gave them to him. He approached a town next, giving what little trinkets he'd brought with him to the children there. Everywhere he went the traveler gave a little piece of himself."
She paused, thinking about the story and how to continued. "Eventually, the traveler gave away everything he had, including the clothes on his back. He still had to travel so he walked through the woods to hide from the peering eyes or others. It's there that the traveler met a witch. She begged him for his eyes and the traveler, being the kind fool that he was, have them to her. He continued through the forest and then came across three goblins. The goblins were so hungry and so the traveler told them to eat him. At the end they only left his head but the traveler continued to smile. They gave him a gift, a little note with the word fool written across it. The traveler couldn't see anymore but he cried tears of joy. 'This is the first present that anyone has ever given me.' The traveler said and then he died. A smile still on his face."
Kat's voice tapered off into silence. "Maybe that wasn't really happy but the traveler was happy."
no subject
"Yeah, that's messed up. But not a bad story!" And it had given her a little time to wrack her brain for what stories she knew.
"Are you familiar with King Arthur and the knights of the round table?"
no subject
"Maybe. What I know might be different from your world." Kat didn't think so but she was excited to hear Stephanie tell a story.
no subject
"It was New Year's, and King Arthur's court was celebrating when a strange man rode unexpectedly into the hall. He was huge, dressed all in green and carrying an axe. Even his horse was green. The knights were ready to fight him, of course, but he refused because he said they were all too weak. Instead he'd come to play a game: anyone in the hall could him once with his axe on the condition that, in a year and a day, he could return the blow.
"Sir Gawain, the youngest knight of the crew, was the only one to accept the challenge. He took the axe, and the Green Knight obligingly bent over so that Gawain could cut his head off in one slice!
"To everyone's horror the Green Knight stood, picked up his still-bleeding head and told them that Gawain must meet him in the Green Chapel a year and a day later. Then he left.
"When the deadline started to get close Gawain set out as promised in search of the Green Chapel. He reached a great castle just a few days before the appointment where the lord told him that the Green Chapel was only a mile or so away. He let Gawain stay there until the day of the meeting.
"The next morning the Lord suggested a trade. He would give Gawain everything he caught while hunting for the day, and Gawain would give the Lord whatever was given to him that day. Gawain agreed, and the Lord left.
"Once the Lord was gone his beautiful wife came into Gawain’s room and tried to seduce him. But Gawain was an honorable knight, and accepted only a single kiss. When the Lord returned and gave the knight his meat Gawain gave him a kiss in return, with no explanation. The next day was the same, but the Lady got away with 2 kisses that Gawain returned to the Lord. The next was the last day before Gawain’s death appointment, and the Lady gave him 3 kisses and a green sash she said would protect him from all harm.
“That night, though he felt terrible about it, he gave the Lord 3 kisses and said nothing about the sash. The next morning he rode out to the Green Chapel to meet the Green Knight. The knight was waiting there, and when Gawain lowered his head he took a huge swing at his voctim’s neck. He stopped just short, but Gawain had flinched. The Knight mocked him for it and, properly ashamed, bent his head again.
“The Knight lowered the axe and took of his helmet to show that he was the Lord that Gawain had spent the last few days with. He laughed and told Gawain that he was only testing the boy’s courage. This had all been a trick played by Morgause to undermine King Arthur by shaming his most trusted knights.
“Still ashamed to have kept the sash, Gawain demanded the Lord take his promised swing. After some convincing he did... stopping short so Gawain only got a small gash in the back of his neck. He told Gawain that he wasn’t to blame, and he knew that his wife had failed to seduce him. He sent Gawain home with the sash, where the boy told his story and the other knights assured him he’d done the right thing. But from that day on all the Knights of the Round Table wore green sashes to remind them to be honest.”
Steph sat back, satisfied with her retelling, and waited for Kat’s reaction.
no subject
"That's amazing. I didn't know that one." It wasn't in any of the stories that she'd read nor was it related to what she had to look up for the Order. "That's a very sweet story. I wish that kind of honesty existed."
As hopeful as Kat was, she didn't think that knights like that truly existed.
no subject
"Oh, chivalry, you know. I'm sure somebody like that is out there somewhere. Somewhere far away, where monsters are only stories. Probably rich, too."
no subject
Kat laughed and shook her head. "If you meet someone like that, you should send them my way. It'd be a nice change." She loved Vergil but he was the furthest thing from a night in shining armor.
no subject
“Not a chance. Finders keepers.”
no subject
"You're always welcome to visit Stephanie. I like having you around." Stephanie made her smile which wasn't something that Kat was used too.
no subject
"Tell Vergil I said 'bye, okay?"
no subject
With that, she went to go find Vergil in the shadows of the trees.
