[MINGLE] PLOT: Down the Tubes: Alarm

WHERE: The bunker & elsewhere
WHEN: 1 September 2018
OPEN TO: ALL - MINGLE
WARNINGS: Please warn on threads
NOTES: Plot Details | Bunker Details | Bunker Map & Key
Threads may take place ANYTIME during the plot, including before, during and after the tubes have been opened, just please do not godmod tube arrivals without explicit permission. Related threads not in the bunker are welcomed, as are general bunker exploration/reaction threads that have nothing to do with the arrivals. Please reference the bunker key doc for what is and isn't available to explore at present.

Deep under the mountain, tucked away in the newly-discovered bunker complex, there is a room where everyone begins. It is filled with equipment — Computer consoles, monitors — but the point of it all resides within ten vertical stasis tubes lined neatly along a far wall.

One of them has been cracked and lies dormant, dry. In six of the remaining are bodies, unconscious and floating in their familiar vari-colored scrubs, vital signs ticking calmly off on their respective readouts.

In the corner, near the cracked tube, the ceiling has shattered and tumbled inward, across the floor and over the largest console in the room — The one flashing 24 HOURS UNTIL STASIS FAILURE.

"Okay, nobody but my wife's tried to eat me."

He smirks, because there's something liberating in being able to say that, in the flirtatious teasing that doesn't have to go anywhere else, and not because of Snow, but because of Annie.

He raises his eyebrows at the comment about worst kidnappings. Some people here seem to have no idea what it's like to live a life constantly in danger, constantly on the lookout, but it sounds like she's not one of them. She hides it well, though.

"No house of sticks. Little way from here, there's a couple of villages, mostly abandoned. You find an empty one, it's yours. There are occasional tests or tricks to get rewards, but mostly it's just surviving when you can't go to the shops for food."

He looks down at the damp, slightly dirt-stained jeans he's wearing. "Or clothes. For now you're probably stuck in that. I got these in a gift box, and nobody's worked out what you do to get one."

Well. Damn.

“Should have known. It was either that or gay.” Her disappointment apparent, but clearly more for show. Married did not stop her from appreciating. Attractive people were like art and Kenzi had apparently washed up on a gallery of walking masterpieces.

A look touches her features as he goes through explaining how things work around here, a knowing smile that looks very much out of place under the circumstances. Here he is, talking about surviving when you can’t just go to a shops and get food like it’s probably something most people have never had to concern themselves with.

“Oh yeah… What a nightmare.” Dude, you just described the majority of her life only in her version instead of abandoned villages with houses there were abandoned subway tunnels and cardboard boxes. She’s pretty sure she’s going to do just fine.

“So… free housing, crappy clothes, no alcohol and becoming one with the hunter-gatherer lifestyle…” Casually reducing what for most would be a very traumatic experience into a CliffsNotes breakdown of the situation at hand.

“I can work with this… The clothes and the lack of alcohol -” Raising her hand and tilting it from side to side. “The houses… are there walls or are we talking natural ventilation?”

"For some people," he says, flashing her another bright grin. A lot of people here have treated surviving without easy comforts or food supplies as though it were some sort of nightmare. Finnick and Annie are victors, both of them victors who'd been able to survive without relying on stockpiled supplies in the way that Careers often did. But before they were Careers, they'd been poor kids in families that ran small fishing operations, pressing to make big quotas for not enough money, and sometimes they'd had to poach to have enough food.

"They have walls. Run down, a few holes and leaks and a lot of dust, but pretty solid."

Their house has mostly reliable power here, and that's more than anyone in the districts could say.

"That's about the situation," he says. "Occasional earthquakes and crazy weather just for some added fun."

He shrugs, because there's not much they can do about those except be ready for them and smart when they happen. He's downplaying a lot of his own suspicions and fears, but the way she's talking makes it sound like she's got enough experience to know not to trust this place without any extra warnings from him.

"And a couple of people have worked out how to make liquor so find the right friends and you might get lucky."

She catches that grin but doesn’t feed into it, happy for Sir Look-But-Don’t-Touch to suspect she’s not one of those people without having her confirm it. Kenzi might have grown accustomed to not having to beg, borrow and steal to survive these days, but she wasn’t a stranger to having to struggle her way through life. Sure, she might not like the idea of having to chow down on potatoes for the foreseeable future but when you were hungry? You didn’t much care so long as it was edible… and even that was up for negotiation.

Well, already with that description, it was a step-up (or six) from her most recent digs.

“I’ve had worse.” Shrugging it off. She might love the clubhouse but when you had to share it with a Succubus whose bedroom saw more action than the starting five of the Lakers? You learned to appreciate walls. Insulation. Ceilings that didn’t rain dust down upon you.

“What’s your definition of crazy weather? Rain of frogs or just… actual, bad weather?” The question asked in all seriousness. There wasn’t a lot of amphibian rain back home but when it came to the Fae? Very little surprised Kenzi anymore.

“Oh, honey. Rarely do I get lucky.” Only too happy to play into the double entendre. “But I can smell alcohol a mile away. Just give me five minutes and a deck of cards.” She wasn’t stupid enough to believe that anyone was going to just give it to her if it was as scarce as all that.
