[MINGLE] Saints & Sinners Masquerade

WHERE: Corn field next to the inn
WHEN: 31 October, all day and night
OPEN TO: ALL - MINGLE
WARNINGS: Please warn as appropriate in your subject lines
NOTES: Please make sure you have read and understand the event details! If you have questions, drop them here. RECOMMENDED BUT NOT REQUIRED: Put your SCRUBS COLOR in your OTA subject line for folks doing bingo. Time your OTA for the harvest feast, the masquerade, or both. Costume matches and details for folks who did not get matched are here.

This morning, our intrepid villagers awoke to a surprise of the nicer kind: A bundle of clothing left at the foot of their bed, tied with a bow. There is also a note: Put on your new outfit and join the festivities in the corn field next to the inn.

You may be thinking, what corn field next to the inn? The one that sprung up fully-mature overnight, of course.

In the middle of the field, villagers will find an autumn feast: Tables piled with harvest time food and drink, warm and rustic decorations, the day's sunshine fending off any chill in the air.

Tuck in and enjoy, villagers, but take note: Things often look different in the dark, and you might be one of them.

Horseback riding. The thought made sense and, the more he considered it, he found himself nodding. "Easier to catch in the stirrups," he said aloud. "If properly constructed they could also bear a blade along the back of the heel and be used for a weapon. A point at the tip of the heel would make them too precarious to walk on. But if they were reinforced with steel down the heel, it could still be used, but would have to be taken off first."

He didn't even really look abashed at what he'd just done: find a way to weaponise a shoe.

Bobo chuckles at that. "Oh a pair of boots can hide so many blades," he admits. "The heel, either side of the shaft, even in the toe of the boot," he says, considering things he's seen throughout the years. "And wouldn't have to take it off. Just the rightly placed kick," he points out, smiling at the idea in his head. "Though done right, you could do that with heels like this as well."

Interesting. He looked at the boot thoughtfully, considering how a hidden blade could be worked into it and-- the answer was easier than he expected.

Hm. He may have to consider this in even more depth.

"You have great experience in this," Altaïr observed with a degree of appreciation. "I'll be keeping all of this in mind."

"I've had a lot of years, and a lot of enemies," he admits, shrugging as if that means little to nothing o have dealt with things like that. "So you learn a lot of things about defending yourself. They let me keep them and I'll see what I can manage with them to show you."

Though he really does want his sturdier, heavier boots back. Which he can arm as well if he feels he needs to.

"You feeling a bit naked in this lace as well without the weapons you had before?" Naked says the man that is barely dressed.

"Quite," he agreed, not hiding an exhale that was almost a sigh. "Though I had grown used to only wearing two, I miss their familiar weight. Had I may way, even now, I would carry a sword, short blades, throwing knives..." And a pair of Hidden Blades, though that didn't need to be said. No one as yet knew about them - and until someone gained his trust, he would keep it that way. Their existence said too much. More than he wanted said just yet.

"Back in my youth, a lot of the indians, the natives of our area, they carried chipped stone blades. I wonder how hard they'd be to make. I know we got some deer type creatures out in the mountain area they could be use as a handle. If you could find the right kind of stone. Wouldn't even need handles for throwing knives," he notes, as much suggesting as he is thinking about it.

"I have to admit," he says, lips pursing as he strokes his beard. "I might have to try it, see what I can manage."

Altaïr rubbed at his own beard thoughtfully. "Some of those in my village used stone knives. Steel was available, but expensive. Stone, however, was everywhere. Those who skinned, tanned; the basketweavers used them for their scraping. If I remember correctly, the best stone they found for such things was flint. Some few found obsidian, but I hope we find none of that nearby."

The last thing they needed here was a volcano. While he didn't know how far the land stretched in any direction, he knew that eventually, all land ended - be it in a mountain range that was impassable or an ocean they were ill-equipped to navigate. He had traveled on the ocean before. He knew he didn't want to repeat it.

"I'm tempted to try it, to see what I might work out. Will make cleaning the hides easier, I am betting," he says, considering that option and what he might be able to manage, if he can work it out.

He chuckles then, but shakes his head. "I've seen some that look like flint, but I haven't seen anything like obsidian, so if there is any, it's far enough away from here to not see any signs of it."

And he's wandered a lot, looking into things.

"The benefit of stone tools is being able to shape them as you want, as well. I have seen the leatherworkers in my village use stones shaped into circles, half dull, half sharp, rather than any shaped as a knife would be," he added, the memory swimming up from ... somewhere, some moment when he had walked through Masyaf toward the Citadel, likely in his youth. "Though they also used bone worn smooth from many hands."

He kind of frowns, kidding that idea and how that would work out. It makes sense in the ways it could be used to tool leather. Definitely interesting.

"I'm used to having a bit more marked metal and bone, but definitely willing to try what we can here. We have to assume we're here for life, and do what we can for ourselves and others."

"Agreed." He nodded to that easily. "Perhaps some shale would do. It chips easily and leaves a sharp edge, but the ease with which it fractures could be a trouble." It would depend on the strength and thickness of the shale, he thought, but it could do as a beginning. To start with something simple and then advance with skill.

"I walk a lot, so I will look into it to see what I can find," he says, considering the options. "Might have to wander into the mountainous area, but I have to consider the weather and how quickly it might turn here."
