This morning, our intrepid villagers awoke to a surprise of the nicer kind: A bundle of clothing left at the foot of their bed, tied with a bow. There is also a note: Put on your new outfit and join the festivities in the corn field next to the inn.
You may be thinking, what corn field next to the inn? The one that sprung up fully-mature overnight, of course.
In the middle of the field, villagers will find an autumn feast: Tables piled with harvest time food and drink, warm and rustic decorations, the day's sunshine fending off any chill in the air.
Tuck in and enjoy, villagers, but take note: Things often look different in the dark, and you might be one of them.

"What part of all that makes you think if?" Even though he knows that smirk says a lot. "Cougar..." His hand flexes against Cougar's chest. "I want. What part of that kiss says I don't want?"
no subject
He knows how much Jake wants it and he does too, but there are other, worse things. "It's not easy, to love me," he points out. There are the night terrors, the trauma. Even before Bolivia, there had been Afghanistan and all the horrors he'd seen.
Besides, he's not exactly boyfriend material. He barely gets out the words to get close.

"You son of a bitch," he says, smacking him on the arm. "How could you do that and not tell me... and you did it because... I mean, you want..." He gestures between them. So very mature.
"Cougar..." He takes a breath and sighs. "You're my best friend and my unit and you will be part of my life whether than life involves making out and sex or not," he says, meaning it. "So what's harder than what I know? The man you are and all you've been through? The price you pay daily for all you've done for people? None of that is any different, Cougar. I didn't abandon you with them before on your own, why would that change if anything else did?"
no subject
With Cougar, there hadn't been the same concern.
He shrugs, working at the costume and stepping out of it, handing it to Jake and standing only in his boxer-briefs. "You know I'm broken. If you still want that, I'm all yours to give."
no subject
"I want..." Right, look him in the eyes because if he looks down, he's going to lose it and beg for something right then, right there. "I think I always have, and I definitely have for a long time now."
Hooking the deer suit on a stalk, he moves to get out of his costume. "And don't think I didn't notice you do have underwear on," he points out.
no subject
"You cheat, you win," he says, which is his philosophy with not only cards, but apparently also in this. He's very smug and he knows that they're going to give this a shot, even if he doesn't say it out loud.
no subject
"How long have you known, Cougar? That I wanted you?"
And he is mentally calculating how long it's been since Cougar had been cockblocking him.
no subject
Cougar takes the other costume and starts to dress, shrugging. He gives Jake a look like he's not considering the truth in this. Because maybe Cougar wanted Jake before Jake wanted him back?
After all, there's a reason that he didn't want to see Jake with anyone else. "Long enough," he finally says.
no subject
"And we're getting dressed why?"
Because that is a legit question! One that needs an answer, because there's so many things he's imagining doing. Though logic might say their first time with such things should maybe not be in a cornfield.
no subject
They're not missing the party, with all the good food and the booze, not even for a good first time. They've been waiting this many years for it, Cougar is of the opinion that they can wait a few hours more, but he has always been the more patient of the two.
"Dress," is all he says, because he wants to get back to the alcohol.
no subject
For the longest time he stares at Cougar, almost hurt but then he manages to nod, pulling himself together and getting into the costume because it's not like he's going to force himself on Cougar, or expect anything from him he's not willing to give.
So he wriggles his way into the jumpsuit, dragging up the zipper, his chin up but his gaze kind of somewhere off in the distance. Doing what he does best, overthinking what he's said and done and wondering if he's screwed up somewhere along the line.
no subject
He eases back, licking his lips and looking him over. "Later," is a promise that he definitely intends to collect on. "When the hunter finds his prey."
no subject
"Been waiting forever for you to catch me, what's a few more hours?"
