This morning, our intrepid villagers awoke to a surprise of the nicer kind: A bundle of clothing left at the foot of their bed, tied with a bow. There is also a note: Put on your new outfit and join the festivities in the corn field next to the inn.
You may be thinking, what corn field next to the inn? The one that sprung up fully-mature overnight, of course.
In the middle of the field, villagers will find an autumn feast: Tables piled with harvest time food and drink, warm and rustic decorations, the day's sunshine fending off any chill in the air.
Tuck in and enjoy, villagers, but take note: Things often look different in the dark, and you might be one of them.

Although the fact that it seems to have happened to very nearly everyone does help a little. As does the fact that her own outfit (and the crown that has come with it) seems to be one of the less unfortunate ones. Even if she can't entirely say it's the most accurate of choices.
Still, she wears it with the same confidence she would anything else as she makes the rounds, often with a drink in hand, although she's careful to not get too drunk just yet. And wherever she happens to go, there's a nod and polite smile for the people she passes, and perhaps a bit of conversation besides, should whoever she's happened to pass by feel up for it.

Her clothes had started as a pair of comfortable shorts and a hoodie but as soon as the hour struck everything changes.
Kat was wearing a beautiful white dress with large frustrating angel wings popping out of her back. She sighed but kept an eye at the other costumes. It didn't look like everyone had changed though it was less than a handful of people who weren't wearing costumes.
She turned and felt the pressure of her wings smacking against a nearby stranger. Kat quickly turned and set her drink on the table. "I'm so sorry. I'm not used to these." She should have just left when she had the chance.

Case in point, the fact that she's just been smacked by something soft and feathery. Which isn't anything that she'd consider worth getting too upset over, but definitely suggests that the person wearing the wings isn't quite used to the idea of having them.
"It's quite alright," she answers with a smile as she turns to face Kat properly. "I'm not sure I would have been used to them either, if I were in your shoes, and they're soft enough there's been no harm done besides."
no subject
"They are very soft." She reached out towards the tip of one and ran her fingers along a soft white feather. "And unexpected."
Kat felt like she was the furthest thing from an angel. "I'm Kat." Her voice was sweet and kind though there was a darkness in Kat's gaze. "It's nice to meet you."
no subject
"I'd imagine most people here are finding their new outfits rather unexpected."
Even if most of them haven't come with additional appendages like Kat's has.
"Phryne. And likewise."
no subject
"Have you been here long?"
Kat didn't remember seeing her but that didn't mean all that much since Kat only came to the inn during meal times.
no subject
"A couple of months, so far."
Which she's gathered is not terribly long, in the scheme of things. But it's certainly longer than she would have preferred even so. Even if she's not making a whole lot of effort to directly think about that fact.
no subject
"It's the same for me." Though Kat had been mostly keeping to herself.
"What do you think of this place?" She'd seen it as a salvation at first but now she wasn't so sure.
no subject
(Which is undeniably frustrating, but it's not the first time she's had to put in a significant amount of effort to track down any relative evidence, and it's hardly about to be the last time, either.)
"Frankly? It's not much better than a gilded cage, and one that doesn't even have the decency to be warm besides."
no subject
She wanted a new start but the two people she wanted a new start with weren't here.
"I'm sorry. I'm not really in a party mood. I think I'm going to go home." And try not to hit more people with her wings along the way.
no subject
Admittedly, this is mostly because she'd very much prefer to be home, but either way, she's not terribly thrilled about the idea of new starts. Kat's comment, on the other hand, has her obvious displeasure fading first to surprise and then concern. She's not about to stop Kat, and doesn't know her well enough to have a sense as to how well actually vocalizing that concern is going to go over, but she's not about to hide it either. If it's enough to have Kat want to talk more about whatever's on her mind, she's free to, and if not, so be it.
"Of course," she answers instead, with a slow nod.
no subject
As she left the party her costume vanished and her clothes returned to normal.
