[MINGLE] Saints & Sinners Masquerade

WHERE: Corn field next to the inn
WHEN: 31 October, all day and night
OPEN TO: ALL - MINGLE
WARNINGS: Please warn as appropriate in your subject lines
NOTES: Please make sure you have read and understand the event details! If you have questions, drop them here. RECOMMENDED BUT NOT REQUIRED: Put your SCRUBS COLOR in your OTA subject line for folks doing bingo. Time your OTA for the harvest feast, the masquerade, or both. Costume matches and details for folks who did not get matched are here.

This morning, our intrepid villagers awoke to a surprise of the nicer kind: A bundle of clothing left at the foot of their bed, tied with a bow. There is also a note: Put on your new outfit and join the festivities in the corn field next to the inn.

You may be thinking, what corn field next to the inn? The one that sprung up fully-mature overnight, of course.

In the middle of the field, villagers will find an autumn feast: Tables piled with harvest time food and drink, warm and rustic decorations, the day's sunshine fending off any chill in the air.

Tuck in and enjoy, villagers, but take note: Things often look different in the dark, and you might be one of them.

Phryne is no stranger to masquerade balls. True, she hasn't had a whole lot of time or occasion to attend one of late, much less the chance to enjoy a party that doesn't end up being derailed by a murder at some point, but the idea is one that she's perfectly alright. Having her clothes change as if by magic... that is a little harder to wrap her mind around.

Although the fact that it seems to have happened to very nearly everyone does help a little. As does the fact that her own outfit (and the crown that has come with it) seems to be one of the less unfortunate ones. Even if she can't entirely say it's the most accurate of choices.

Still, she wears it with the same confidence she would anything else as she makes the rounds, often with a drink in hand, although she's careful to not get too drunk just yet. And wherever she happens to go, there's a nod and polite smile for the people she passes, and perhaps a bit of conversation besides, should whoever she's happened to pass by feel up for it.

Kat had spent most of the event towards the edge of the gathering. She had a glass of cider in her hand but after the first few sips she'd forgotten that she was carrying it and used it in order to keep her hands busy. She wanted to smile and enjoy herself but it was difficult.

Her clothes had started as a pair of comfortable shorts and a hoodie but as soon as the hour struck everything changes.

Kat was wearing a beautiful white dress with large frustrating angel wings popping out of her back. She sighed but kept an eye at the other costumes. It didn't look like everyone had changed though it was less than a handful of people who weren't wearing costumes.

She turned and felt the pressure of her wings smacking against a nearby stranger. Kat quickly turned and set her drink on the table. "I'm so sorry. I'm not used to these." She should have just left when she had the chance.

There are definitely more people who are wearing things that are recognizable as costume then who are not, that much is true. Not that Phryne can say that she's entirely surprised. The masquerade might have been something of a surprise, but that doesn't mean that the appeal of wearing a costume isn't something that's very nearly universal - or so she would assume anyway - and given that she isn't the slightest bit aware that the costumes are tied to people having decided to wear the new outfits they've been given it doesn't occur to her that there might be more to it than simply people enjoying a masquerade. Albeit in costumes that are perhaps not precisely ones that are either convenient, comfortable, or ones that the people in question would have chosen.

Case in point, the fact that she's just been smacked by something soft and feathery. Which isn't anything that she'd consider worth getting too upset over, but definitely suggests that the person wearing the wings isn't quite used to the idea of having them.

"It's quite alright," she answers with a smile as she turns to face Kat properly. "I'm not sure I would have been used to them either, if I were in your shoes, and they're soft enough there's been no harm done besides."

Kat exhaled a breath of relief. She liked to lie low and didn't want to get start getting in the habit of upsetting people. Not that anyone has been upset by her clumsy navigation with wings, but there was always a chance that someone would take offense.

"They are very soft." She reached out towards the tip of one and ran her fingers along a soft white feather. "And unexpected."

Kat felt like she was the furthest thing from an angel. "I'm Kat." Her voice was sweet and kind though there was a darkness in Kat's gaze. "It's nice to meet you."

For all that Phryne would at least like to hope that most people aren't going to be upset by something so small as someone running into them with part of their costume, she has to admit that she isn't familiar with everyone in the village. And given that she has known people who would it's not impossible that there might be a few people of that general nature present within the village.

"I'd imagine most people here are finding their new outfits rather unexpected."

Even if most of them haven't come with additional appendages like Kat's has.

"Phryne. And likewise."

"Unexpected is one way to put it." A light smile touched the edge of Kat's lips. She thought the wings were a cute touch though she didn't feel like she was an angel. If she was... maybe Vergil wouldn't have tossed her so carelessly to the side.

"Have you been here long?"

Kat didn't remember seeing her but that didn't mean all that much since Kat only came to the inn during meal times.

The finer details of who might or might not be well-suited to wear wings like the ones Kat currently has is something that Phryne can't really speak to. They are lovely wings, of that there's no doubt. But she's never entirely made it her business to delve into who might be suited to them. Or at least, not outside of there being a specific reason for her to, and just at the moment, there isn't.

"A couple of months, so far."

Which she's gathered is not terribly long, in the scheme of things. But it's certainly longer than she would have preferred even so. Even if she's not making a whole lot of effort to directly think about that fact.

Kat's world was a place of both angels and demons. She's never seen the angel's involvement on Earth but the demons were prevalent and wherever they went, they caused strife. It was troubling and it made her wonder just how much their captors knew about them.

"It's the same for me." Though Kat had been mostly keeping to herself.

"What do you think of this place?" She'd seen it as a salvation at first but now she wasn't so sure.

The question of just how much the Observers should happen to know about their respective worlds is something that Phryne would be able to say. They clearly know enough to be able to find them, even if only to remove them from their respective worlds, and as far as she's aware no one's had to add their own name to the network contained within the wristbands, which suggests that they at least know the names of the people they abduct. Past that, however, there doesn't seem to be enough evidence to say one way or the other.

(Which is undeniably frustrating, but it's not the first time she's had to put in a significant amount of effort to track down any relative evidence, and it's hardly about to be the last time, either.)

"Frankly? It's not much better than a gilded cage, and one that doesn't even have the decency to be warm besides."

"Yes." Kat's expression softened. "I don't think it's so bad though. It's a new start, even for a short time."

She wanted a new start but the two people she wanted a new start with weren't here.

"I'm sorry. I'm not really in a party mood. I think I'm going to go home." And try not to hit more people with her wings along the way.

[personal profile] fishingfortrouble 2018-12-18 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps. But I've had quite enough of new starts for a while."

Admittedly, this is mostly because she'd very much prefer to be home, but either way, she's not terribly thrilled about the idea of new starts. Kat's comment, on the other hand, has her obvious displeasure fading first to surprise and then concern. She's not about to stop Kat, and doesn't know her well enough to have a sense as to how well actually vocalizing that concern is going to go over, but she's not about to hide it either. If it's enough to have Kat want to talk more about whatever's on her mind, she's free to, and if not, so be it.

"Of course," she answers instead, with a slow nod.

Kat's expression remained soft but warmed some at Phryne's reply. "I hope we can talk again more." With at a silent incline of her head, Kat turned and made her way towards the edge of the gathering. She was careful of her wings, trying not to bump anyone in the process, and made her escape into the darkness of night.

As she left the party her costume vanished and her clothes returned to normal.
