This morning, our intrepid villagers awoke to a surprise of the nicer kind: A bundle of clothing left at the foot of their bed, tied with a bow. There is also a note: Put on your new outfit and join the festivities in the corn field next to the inn.
You may be thinking, what corn field next to the inn? The one that sprung up fully-mature overnight, of course.
In the middle of the field, villagers will find an autumn feast: Tables piled with harvest time food and drink, warm and rustic decorations, the day's sunshine fending off any chill in the air.
Tuck in and enjoy, villagers, but take note: Things often look different in the dark, and you might be one of them.

"I don't think grateful is exactly how Bruce is feeling right now," she says, amused, nodding out towards their poor, beleaguered associate trying very hard to sidle his way out of the crowd. "Cold, maybe." She takes the opportunity to look Steve over, an approving assessment of his new style. "Tails are a good fit on you, Rogers. If I'd known you cleaned up this nice I'd have tried harder to drag you out with me."

Well, it does look like some people got the short end of the stick when it comes to outfits, [ He allows, refusing to crack a smile at Bruce's predicament, and idly toys with the idea of offering his jacket to the guy. But he's not sure what that might accomplish other than making Bruce feel worse. ] But this could be a lot worse.
I'm not really a 'paint the town red' kinda guy, Nat. But thanks for the ego boost.

"You know red's never really been my color," she says instead, a faint shrug of one shoulder accompanying the words. "Clashes with my hair. Black, on the other hand..." A joke, a small one. But he isn't wrong. This could be so much worse. It's important to try and enjoy these small moments as they come. "We should dance at least once, though. It is a party."
no subject
That's not entirely true. I've seen photos from when you were undercover at Stark's company. [ And now he cracks a small smile because Nat is Nat and she's the closest friend he has here besides Bucky. And maybe Bruce himself, which is a little weird. ] But. Black is definitely your best color.
Especially if you're going to drag me out for a dance and endanger your feet.
no subject
"Well, you know how dedicated I am to my job." Teasing, in her quiet way. "But I'm glad you agree." Her smile grows just a touch wider as she looks up at him (and up, and up--what's with ninety percent of the men she's around topping six feet). "My feet have survived worse. Does that mean you're going to say yes?" Truly, now she knows this must be a dream.
no subject
Pretty sure saying 'yes' would be a formality and you're going to get me out there no matter what.
[ Determined, little "ex" spy is determined. And she's one of the few women he's comfortable around in this kind of setting. All those missions have to count for something, right? ]
no subject
They do, in fact, count for something. Although this does make that conversation with Vanille even more hilarious, considering what she'd told the girl about her partnership with Steve. Natasha reaches over, pushes at his shoulder lightly with one hand. "Hey, I do respect the rules of consent. You could say no. If you really, really don't want to, you don't have to. But I'd be disappointed." You wouldn't want that, would you, Steve? Come on, be a pal.
no subject
If I really, really didn't want to be here, I wouldn't. [ His smile widens into something close to a smaller one for anyone else. ] And I wouldn't dare disappoint you.
