This morning, our intrepid villagers awoke to a surprise of the nicer kind: A bundle of clothing left at the foot of their bed, tied with a bow. There is also a note: Put on your new outfit and join the festivities in the corn field next to the inn.

You may be thinking, what corn field next to the inn? The one that sprung up fully-mature overnight, of course.

In the middle of the field, villagers will find an autumn feast: Tables piled with harvest time food and drink, warm and rustic decorations, the day's sunshine fending off any chill in the air.

Tuck in and enjoy, villagers, but take note: Things often look different in the dark, and you might be one of them.

Vasquez likes his clothes too much to make a dirty offer about letting them switch if he wants, because he doesn't want to give any of his things away, not if he can help it. Cocking his collar up, he gives the other man a curious look. "What is it you said I am again?"

"It's a good outfit, a lot like the layers I wore back home, even if the hat is different. And why the patch?" he wonders, plucking at it.

"A pirate." Which is what he's supposed to be, too, only a lot more obnoxiously. (If only Emma had made him watch the Disney version of himself. Alas.) "The patch is for boarding another ship during a battle. Keep one eye covered, it adjusts to the darkness, and then you can enter a pitch-black hold and switch the patch over to the other eye. The eye that's used to the darkness lets you see."

Or expect your crew to do it and then you don't have to wear one.

Vasquez squints at him and tries to remember the definition of pirates. He thinks about the stories he's heard and when he imagines them, he can start to see it, but he still couldn't imagine that life, not when he's barely doing anything close to a sea.

"I guess they wouldn't let me just be a cowboy, since that's what I am?" he says, even though that would have been nice to get some more of those clothes. "This is good too. Better than the green thing biting your ass."

"The crocodile." It doesn't look much like a crocodile, but close enough to get the message across to him. It might be amusing to someone, but it's not amusing to him.

"If they felt like letting us be who we are, they wouldn't have brought us here in the first place."

It's more of those animals that Goodnight had mentioned, when they'd been crossing Comanche territory. "So this is what that is?" He thinks that the crocodile biting him before he crosses the bridge would be an angry thing if they looked real, but this? Well, this is just funny.

"Why, you don't like getting free clothes? You could have a cuddle with your new pet," he taunts mildly, mostly to see what kind of reaction he gets, as he often does with new people.

"Crocodiles are not cuddly." Not the real ones, and not the men who dress like them. Point made, somebody. He'll be the talk of the village tonight, he's sure.

"I'm more concerned about what price they're going to extract from us for the free clothes." Other than embarrassment, because he won't believe that that's the only point of this until he sees otherwise. "Nothing around here is free, and the good doesn't last long."

"Wouldn't think they were, not with the way they talked about them," Vasquez assures, because no one in their right mind would ever talk about an animal in relation to the Comanche and not make it a fearsome and terrifying animal.

"Why? What do you think could happen? Other than you having a crocodile attached to your ass," he says bluntly, because it's already not so good for him.
