[MINGLE] Saints & Sinners Masquerade

WHERE: Corn field next to the inn
WHEN: 31 October, all day and night
OPEN TO: ALL - MINGLE
WARNINGS: Please warn as appropriate in your subject lines
NOTES: Please make sure you have read and understand the event details! If you have questions, drop them here. RECOMMENDED BUT NOT REQUIRED: Put your SCRUBS COLOR in your OTA subject line for folks doing bingo. Time your OTA for the harvest feast, the masquerade, or both. Costume matches and details for folks who did not get matched are here.

This morning, our intrepid villagers awoke to a surprise of the nicer kind: A bundle of clothing left at the foot of their bed, tied with a bow. There is also a note: Put on your new outfit and join the festivities in the corn field next to the inn.

You may be thinking, what corn field next to the inn? The one that sprung up fully-mature overnight, of course.

In the middle of the field, villagers will find an autumn feast: Tables piled with harvest time food and drink, warm and rustic decorations, the day's sunshine fending off any chill in the air.

Tuck in and enjoy, villagers, but take note: Things often look different in the dark, and you might be one of them.

Sam didn't mind the magical costume so much. Eighteen months of shenanigans made her just about as jaded as she'd once pretended to be. And, really, she'd been waiting all day for the other shoe to drop. All things considered, the outfit actually matched itself well to her aesthetic.

No. What bothered her was that their gracious Overlords had turned her into a fucking Sith. A Sith. It annoyed Sam on levels big and small, not even including the fact that she'd long ago fashioned herself after Luke Skywalker and used his damn name on the network.

Well, they were probably trying to piss her off.

Good on them.

She decided to pretend it was a choice. That she was cosplaying Ventress and fuck them all. It actually helped more than she expected.

But when she was making her way through the crowd, she caught sight of something that took her mind off of it even faster.

"Holy shit," she said, stopping dead in her tracks when she caught sight of Tony. And she couldn't help it. She started laughing.

"That is the only appropriate reaction, here." He huffs, turning to face her with careful shuffled steps so he didn't fall off the damn stilts. It's all very balanced while leaving him off balance. Probably in no danger of falling over but he feels both very exposed (thank you low fat by necessity diet and hours of physical labor for keeping him lean and trim) in the catsuit and pretty unmoored with the mask and helmet that holds up the head on top of his head. It's- yeah.

Filming in this must've been an absolute bitch.

"Or 'what the fuck.' I'm a fan of what the fuck."

Sam always appreciated it when old people knew how to swear. Probably because most of the Venture Elders were just too fucking political. Too polite. It was mind-numbing.

Tony was cool, she supposed. For someone from that world, anyway. "Okay. 'What the fuck' is good," she said. "Do you wanna start this whole conversation over, or should we just assume I said it. Because I can promise you, I thought it."

Thank the fuck whatever nonsense had enabled Kat to read her mind seemed to have died down.

But then, she really had nothing to hide from Tony.

"I was actually looking for you," she admitted.

"We can assume you meant it. Your mouth said 'holy shit' but your soul clearly said 'what the fuck'. I could see it in your eyes." Or, whatever. Didn't matter, this costume is ridiculous for so many reasons and he will just have to find a way to get back at Peter for whatever it was he said or did that made this happen. Possibly by spooking him with said costume.

"Really?" Facial expressions aren't really visible at this point, but the way he cocks his head is exaggerated by the alien skull on top of his, so, that's obvious at least. "What about?"

She couldn't help it, the way he tilted his head just made the whole costume look ridiculous. She was pretty sure she'd never seen such a considerate and thoughtful rubber-suit alien before. Despite her good intentions, she laughed. No, no she snorted.

Some Sith she was.

"Sorry, sorry," she said, shaking her head. "I had some shop talk to discuss with you. Doctor Banner and I had some thoughts about a study."

Sam clapped a hand over her mouth, trying to calm the fuck down.

Maybe this was one of those 'if you don't laugh, you'll cry' sort of scenarios. She used to be rather well acquainted with them. Another lifetime and all.

"No, no. It's kind of comical." Kind of a lot, he can have a sense of humor about this now that he's not so blindsided by being a fucking alien. Technically he is compared to most people. Alien people. From not Terra? Earth. Whatever it's called. One way or another it's dirt which- that's a little funny? A lot.

"Study about...? Breathe between the chuckles, Giggles, you might hurt yourself." He straightens out, tipping his head back to sip his cider.

There wasn't much of a point in telling him she didn't need to breathe. Sam just shook her head, pulling herself together. She was just glad she hadn't started crying. Kindred tears were disgusting.

"It's a study of our own DNA," she said. "Doctor Banner are I were looking for a common thread between the way his DNA and my DNA was altered, but two points make a line, not a causality. We were thinking that maybe some of the equipment down in the tubes could be altered to look at genetic proteins."

Which was where Tony kind of came in. Sam was more of an engineer than a mechanic. And much more of a geneticists than an engineer. But from what she understood, Tony knew his shit.

"Doctor Banner recommended you."

"That's a little advanced for what we've got available. Most of what's in the bunker is fucked six ways to sunday and the lower levels, what we can see of them, look older. But if we're all clones of some kind DNA analysis and alteration has to be possible somewhere in the complex..." Talons drum against his chest in a staccato clack-clack-clack as he picks through what he's seen and what he's heard of the bunker- without going down again when he's not full of holes he can't be sure what's on hand-

But Bruce would know what to look for. "Doable. You and Bruce should be able to pick out what we can re-purpose from the mess, if you bring it up here, I can make the alterations."

thegreatexperiment: (Skeptical)

[personal profile] thegreatexperiment 2018-11-03 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If nothing else, Tony had a can-do spirit. Sam could appreciate that, especially given her tendency to pessimism. And, really, if it didn't work, it didn't work. The only thing they really wasted was time. And time was the one thing they definitely had in excess.

She nodded. "I'll see what I can steal," she said. "I promised to take charge of the equipment. Doctor Banner is in charge of recruiting subjects."

Sam...wasn't good at people.

Bruce, on the other hand, was oddly lovable. In a dorky sort of way. Plus, a lot of people seemed to know and respect him. Which no one could say about Sam.

"...It's a medical study so he should be able to handle it but-" Bruce. Handling people. He had to once, he absolutely can, Tony's seen him do it but-

Well.

It's Bruce.

There's nothing wrong with him but- there's nothing terribly compelling in him before he stats going about science either. Years of trying to be unremarkable have taken a toll. "Let me know if either of you need a hand with either of those things."
thegreatexperiment: (Confused)

[personal profile] thegreatexperiment 2018-11-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam frowned a little, not quite sure she understood what the hell was going through Tony's mind. But she wasn't the people person. She never had been. "We will," she said finally. "That's why I'm here."

She really needed to learn more about their fucked up world. Beyond all the shit she'dd gotten out of Fucky Darns.

And beyond Bruce's weird green monster thing.

"I can't build. I can hack and manipulate. But I can't do the shit you can do. And, to be honest, I don't think either of us have the pull around here that you seem to have. So...yeah. We need it."

"People keep implying that I have some kind of authority- I don't. I'm engaging, loud, and at the very least some kind of entertaining. That's it." Compared to Sam and Bruce- he's connected through his work to more people if nothing else, loud and noticeable for his frequent poking at the network and the expo but- whether or not people listen to him?

That's up in the air.

"But I'll be your front man for this. I'm pretty sure there are at least five other people that are curious as to how they are suddenly changed when they woke up here."

"Don't underestimate the power of being engaging, loud, and entertaining," Sam said, giving him a crooked smile. "Not everyone can do it."

And, of course, unwillingly, she found herself thinking about Avery. Sweet, well-intentioned Avery. None of those things, and yet, he somehow managed to make it work for him.

Well, he was a lot older than any of them.

"But thank you," she added.

"Clearly it works for more than just the modern media." He huffs. "I'll dig through what I've got, start drawing up designs that we can probably work with what we have on hand."

It felt good to be working with proper scientists again. Even human ones. Especially human ones, probably. And Sam afforded Tony one of her rare, little smiles. A smile that actually meant something.

"Cool," she said. "I mean, assuming that destroying Tokyo doesn't take up too much of your time," she added, gesturing to his costume.

Yes, yes, she knew that was Godzilla. But the punchline was just waiting for her to throw it.
