Rain, hail, shine; blizzard, earthquake or lightning storm, the meals at the Inn have continued. People can, and do, wander in at breakfast and supper - as long as the stores are enough for three meals, anyway - but the main meal remains the one at midday. It's this meal which is the main event that Kate structures her day around, making sure volunteers arrive to help prepare, serve, and then clean; double-checking that there is enough food for all, that stores aren't too low and that fresh greens have been gathered. With the village chickens now producing eggs regularly there's a welcome addition of protein to the foodstuffs, and by now there are a number of experienced cooks in the village. At least, experienced in the ways of cooking communally and with what's on hand.

The main room of the Inn is swept, dusted; cutlery and bowls, plates are laid out on the sideboards in piles to be collected as people need. Everything is as it should be, even if some people - Kate included - are feeling a bit under the weather. But that's to be expected, isn't it? Everyone gets run down, has a day or two of feeling off colour. Certainly, it's nothing to worry about.

So come on in, help at the kitchen or pull up a chair at a table and enjoy some warm food and company while the outside confusion stays firmly outside.

"Mostly about him eating things we're saving for the soup," Baze explains, only mostly serious. She can probably handle him, but Baze isn't one for keeping pets in the house. Or keeping pets, period, really. "How big will he get?"

Moana looked down at Itiiti with a frown. She knew that he wouldn't get into anything that he wasn't allowed too but he would beg but pushing things with his snout.

"I don't know." She admitted while continuing to chop into the fish in front of her. "He isn't the same kind of breed as the pigs from home." Pau stopped growing when Moana was in her early teens, Itiiti has been growing since she got him a few months before.

"Hmm. We don't even have pigs where I come from," Baze says, to explain why he has no idea, either. Then, because they're having a conversation and she seems like a nice enough kid when she's not splurging on too much ice cream, he asks, "Where are you from?" And he isn't even expecting a planet name, like what he would expect in his own universe. He's learned enough about the people here to know that most of them don't think about their home in terms of "planet".
chosenbytheocean: (PB - Oh no)

"Motunui" She replied easily, though she knew that Baze would have no idea where or what that was. "It's the name of my island. Where I grew up." She knew that there were other planets and different places out there but they were hard for Moana to imagine.

She looked up at Baze, pausing in her preparation. "Where are you from?"

"A desert moon called Jedha," Baze answers, focusing his gaze back on his vegetables, though he's still listening to her. "Very far from your island, I think. We don't have many oceans on Jedha for there to be islands in."
chosenbytheocean: (PB - thinking hard)

"I haven't seen a desert before." She knew what they were but her island was small and there hadn't been a desert anywhere in the village.

Moana went back to cutting, filling he kitchen with the rhythmic sounds of her knife falling against the wooden cutting board. "Do you like the ocean?" She asked, looking back over her shoulder to catch Baze's eye.

"I have only seen the ocean once," Baze admits. "And I was too busy shooting people to pay it much attention." That whole place had been uncomfortable. Hot, sticky, full of smoke and steam... yeah, he really doesn't remember much about the ocean itself besides that it was wet.
chosenbytheocean: (PB - turning away)

Moana's lips tugged into a frown. "That-" She had no idea what to say.

"That isn't what the ocean is like." She focused on her task as she spoke. "The ocean is endless. It shines and glitter when the sun touches it. It calls adventure and wonder. It's an amazing thing." Moana would show him her ocean if she could.

"It was hot, it made moving harder, and didn't give us any cover," Baze shrugs. He pops a piece of the celery he's cutting into his mouth, crunches, and adds, "I am too old for adventure, anyway. I'll leave that to people young, like you."

Moana laughed softly. "I guess so." There was wonder and excitement in her voice, brimming just beneath the surface. She's used to spending her time stuck on a small island but she didn't prefer it.

"Have you seen the ocean across the breach yet?"
chirrutsluck: (laugh)

[personal profile] chirrutsluck 2017-08-30 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
She's a cute kid, he'll give her that. "I haven't been that far across. So there's a beach." Maybe he'd better investigate, if just so he can tell the girl here he's seen the ocean. He doubts it'll be all that magical, to be honest, but he supposes he ought to at least see it.
chosenbytheocean: (PB - talking)

[personal profile] chosenbytheocean 2017-08-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah." Moana brightened. "You should go and see it." He'd most likely have a better time at this beach than he did the last beach he was at.

She finished deboning the last fish and began to toss the bits of meat into the pot of soup before cleaning up. She lifted the bucket with the fish heads and bones off the floor so that Itiiti wouldn't have to fight the urge to knock it over.

"Maybe in a few days," Baze allows. "I heard the other town is exactly like ours. Even down to the rocks. Except apparently there's an ocean." He's visited, but only briefly, and from a distance, enough to confirm that it sure looked the same.

Moana nodded her head in a soft bow. She had seen the ocean and then yelled at it. It hadn't been the oceans fault but Moana had been hoping for something more. "Let me know what you think. I'm going to take Itiiti and go wash up."

She nudged the pig with her foot before heading outside with her messy hands. She didn't want to make the water that they had brought inside dirty with her washing the fish goozes from her fingers.

Baze considers her as she leaves, the girl and her pig and her hope, then shakes his head and goes back to the roots. He's not like that. He hasn't been in decades, and he's not about to start now.

But it's probably all right if someone else is.
