He wouldn't actually say it was really hot yet, but it's definitely getting to the sort of temperatures that make Finnick miss swimming. There's no substitute for the sand of a beach underfoot, the reassuring roar of the surf, the taste of salt in the air, but there is at least water here, tumbling down from the waterfall and flowing through the canyon until it disappears into the rocks to the south. And he knows from constantly checking his fish traps that the water is deliciously cool.

He's tested out a few spots along the river for swimming, and it's good to be in the water again, after being kept out of it for so long by the harshness of the winter.  Not swimming doesn't feel right to him, and it never has. He's never spent this long somewhere with a winter this cold, and he can't remember ever going this long without swimming. So Finnick's been testing the water out since before it was probably what most people would consider to be warm enough to swim. It had helped that he and Annie had some gifts to hunt for in the river, but those have long been found, and now it's just for relaxation.

The calmest, most relaxing place he's found so far for swimming in the river is the pool at the foot of the waterfall, where the water plunges into the canyon crisp and cool from the heights of the cliffs. It's deep around the falls, and it's big enough to swim, and Finnick spends most of the hottest parts of the day there.

So whenever he hears someone talking about the heat while he's dropping food off in the village, he suggests they try the waterfall pool. Word's likely to get around, so he won't be entirely surprised to find other people stopping by the falls.

When they do, they're likely to find him swimming around the deep part near the falls, stripped down to his underwear and, from the grin on his face, having the time of his life. It's clear just from looking at him that he's good at this, moving through the water with a confidence and grace more like to a sea-creature than a man. He's in such a good mood that he even calls out to greet many of the people who approach.

Of course, he's not the guardian of the waterfall: everyone's welcome to stop by whether he's there or not. Once or twice, there's even a moose to be seen standing at the edge of the pool taking a long, relaxing drink.

He "mmhmm"d, squinting out at the trees. Logan took her questions seriously, considering what options were available to them. Letting go of the rock, he sank beneath the water like a stone for a brief dip. When he popped up again, he was ready to answer, smoothing his wet hair back.

"We'd need to make a firebreak. Clear away the vegetation for twenty feet from the tree line, churn up the earth so those embers can't have anything to burn. Wet the house and the grass down, and pray for no wind."

Jean took all that in and tried to digest it. It was new information but she'd always been someone who sought knowledge and wanted to utilize it; her previous experiences with this had always been with esoteric, book-learned things but this kind of thing was much more important out here in a relative frontier.

"Show me how to do it. I'll help you as much as I can but I need to be taught, you know? It's not something I've ever had to learn before now."

"You'll learn now," he told her, in a tone that brooked no refusal. "I need to know you can handle it on your own."

Logan didn't expect he'd go anywhere, but that last him probably thought the same, and he'd left her without any usable skills. Jean was neat and organized, sure, but times like these called for all hands on deck, and all those hands had better know what the fuck they were doing.

That was the only thing he could do for her here, now.

His tone with her seemed kind of stern but Jean guessed it was more out of wanting to see her safe than being angry or being annoyed with her. She came up just close enough to be within arms length and touched his shoulder lightly.

"I've been okay so far, Logan. I need to learn some things, yeah, but nothing happened between you disappearing and coming back. I was fine. I don't know if you even worry about that or anything but if you do, you don't have to."

"So nothing did." It would seem he agreed with her, until he continued, "That doesn't mean it couldn't. Once the roof is finished, we're starting that firebreak."

He rolled that shoulder back, tilting his chin down at her. "How much do you know about basic survival?"

"I haven't died yet," Jean said, shrugging a little. That was made more difficult by being in the water, naturally, but her tone was mild. She knew little about living in the woods or anything like that and she depended on the Inn for food and had spent most of her days there in winter because she could count on a fire being there when she couldn't get one to start in the fireplace or the furnace in her house.

"I can sort of set a fire. The first time I tried to light the furnace I burned myself pretty badly but I'm a quick study."

"Okay." Logan nodded at this point, lifting his hands out of the water as if in surrender. "We'll add that to the lesson plan. Every morning you're learning something. Foraging, hunting- that cedar bark should be dry enough to make cording out of while I finish the roof."

He shifted in the water, a little uneasily. "I'm not healing like I used to. If something happens to me...I'm not leaving you by yourself. The Professor would have my ass for it. Sound like a plan?"

"I want to learn," Jean agreed. "I want to be able to take care of myself and not be so dependent on the charity of others. It's worked out so far since most people are pretty friendly here but if that ever changes, I need to know how to survive."

Jean had been sheltered for most of her life and while she'd been insulated from the harsh realities of the world by the school and by Charles, she was an adult now. Adults had to face prejudice and difficulty head on and she needed to start taking that burden onto her own shoulders and stop expecting others to fight the fight for her. Mutant prejudice wasn't a thing here but survival was and she needed to devote time to it.
