Claire wasn't sure when exactly it had happened since it was just one of those things that she didn't always pay attention to. It wasn't that she took it for granted but it was just kind of natural to think that one's shadow would always be there in some way. Except for the fact that Claire's wasn't.

At first, she just sort of glanced down, didn't see it and continued on. At least for a couple steps until she was suddenly stopping dead and looking down again. Then she was turning in a circle trying to see if maybe she just wasn't looking in the right spot for it. When she didn't see it, she glanced at the sky and then back down again as the feeling of unease started to creep up her spine. It wasn't such a bad thing but it made her feel weird.

Maybe it was just her eyes playing tricks on her?

Glancing up when she spied someone walking close, she waved her hand to catch their attention before she pointed at the ground. "This is going to sound kind of crazy but can you see my shadow?"

This place has never sat well with him since his arrival. Yes, it is true that in recent months he had seemed to accept it and become a lot more complacent, but every so often he'd remember all the evidence of being watched and would get the uncomfortable feeling of being a lab rat again.

He's done with feeling like that. He got too settled here, too comfortable. While it's true that he has found some good things here, it's not home. Home may have its flaws, but at least there he knows he's not being watched all the time.

So one day, when the knowledge of being watched, being toyed with, being experimented on has become intolerable, he sets out to do something about it. They have his blood. He has to get it away from there, away from them. Away from anyone who wants to use it for nefarious purposes.

To most people, it seems like any other day for him around here. When he sets off into the woods with an ax slung over his shoulder, it just could be that he's heading off to chop some firewood. But the knife stuffed in his back pocket and the fact that he's carrying some food in the backpack that he was provided on his arrival indicate that not only is he planning something other than just chopping firewood, and is planning on being gone for longer than the usual time.

He's not going to come back without answers.

OPEN TO: ALL, Mingle style post for the Specimen Room plot
WARNINGS: See the Plot Post for details of the Specimen Room and its contents

Jude's glad to have the meeting out of doors, with or without the illness to prompt it. The cave-in hadn't scared him out of the canyon's cracks and crevices, but the room he'd found with Margaery might, and he needs every helping factor he can get to keep himself steady through the meeting. Public speaking is less a great fear than a thing he's never cared to do, but public speaking on a subject like this might prove too much, and if he pitches over again in front of someone, he's going to throw himself in the fountain and never come back out.

He'd gotten some help to carry the board out of the inn, tacking up fresh sheets of paper to the back of it. While others gathered those villagers well enough to come out to the fields, he'd done his best to recreate his and Margaery's view of the room through the glass, the layout of the coolers, the shape of the machinery at its center. Next to that, he'd tried to draw a rough overview of the room--what shape it might have from above, the placement of the door, the curve of the tunnel that Margaery had led him down.

As far as he'd noticed, there was no way around the rest of the cave to get at the door, but he hadn't been very inclined to look. When he pulls back from the board, charcoal staining his fingers, his brow where he'd wiped back his hair, he turns to find a crowd gathering behind him.

When it comes to the actual explanations, he struggles a bit to project his voice, but the words are there when he looks for them. He sticks to using the drawings to present the information, pointing to each element in turn. "There're electrical lights, florescent ones, in the room and the coolers, so I guess they're working too. And the glass was--uh, well, it was thick enough that knocking into it didn't break anything."  He drops his gaze to his feet, hiding behind his hair at the memory.

WHEN: August 3rd
OPEN TO: Jon Snow
WARNINGS: None at the moment

While they were nowhere near as strong as the original earthquake that rocked the village, Claire was still wary of the smaller ones happening but not enough to stick close to home. There were things that needed to be done and she knew it wouldn't matter where she was if another big earthquake happened again. It was just one of those things that you couldn't escape when it came.

So she decided to spend a day exploring the second village that had been found. She had left a message for Margaery and Erik at her place if either one of them decided to look for her and then off she went. Yes, she probably should have actually gotten someone to tag along with her but she didn't think too hard about it as she made her way through the tunnel.

Of course, she started kicking herself mentally when the first tremor rolled through the ground as she reached the other side. It was enough to make the world tremble around her, causing her to stumble and nearly lose her footing. Catching herself, she felt the trembling get worse and silently marveled for a moment at the noise it created. Not that she stayed still for long. She recognized the danger she was in if she stayed where she was and so she threw herself forward, running without hesitation out of the breach into the other village as the earthquake got worse.

Nearly falling, she whipped about just as she heard rocks falling behind her and watched in horror as the breach actually started to crumble in on itself.

While Claire had experienced a good many things, the whole earthquake bit was fairly new to her and one that she didn't want a repeat of. She also hated it because there was no quick way of checking on anyone else even if the village was small. There had been other things to focus on too but that didn't stop her from setting out to find Erik as soon as she could.

It worried her when she couldn't find him at the Inn at first, so she set out to check the other places she thought he could be but the truth was that she would just have to search blindly while praying he was okay. As time wore on, the worry grew more intense as she covered the distance of the village by going from one end to the other. She even ventured into the trees just to see if she could find any sign of him.

Finally, she was making her way back towards her own house with a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. She didn't want to consider that maybe he was badly hurt or even gone but she was at a loss. Chewing on her bottom lip, she looked around while wondering where to go next.

WHO: Jax Teller
WHERE: House #10, Inn, river
WHEN: 1 July - 9 July
OPEN TO: all
WARNINGS: Jax is his own warning. Language, for sure. Probably going to be sex eventually, knowing him.

i. doin' the best i can (house 10, 1 july)

Jax is on the roof when the ground starts shaking. Being from California, he's no stranger to earthquakes, though they're a lot worse down south than in the valley where he's from. Still, he's familiar enough with them to know he doesn't want to be on a fucking roof repairing shingles when one hits and as soon as he feels the first waves, he scrambles down as fast as he can. He's quick but he's not quick enough to escape harm - he scrapes his shin and bangs the ribs on the same side he'd injured several weeks ago.

Fuck, he hisses, hitting the ground and heading to clear ground as fast as he can. The earthquake isn't anything they can control but he knows the best place to be is as far away from structures as he can get and just wait it out. There'll be aftershocks but those won't be as bad as the initial - this is always the worst part.

It's just a few minutes, all told, but it feels like hours. The world seems to stop when the earth starts to move and when it ceases, the sky opens up and rain begins to fall. It's been dry for weeks and the sun's been all fucked up so the rain is a welcome sight, steam rising up from the ground from just how goddamn hot it'd been before the quake.

Jax limps his way back toward the town, favoring his right leg and trying to keep from slipping on dirt paths that are rapidly becoming mud because he's got to have a drink and a doctor and he thinks the drink could replace the doctor if it's a good enough drink.

ii. and when it's time for leavin' (inn, 2 July - 9 July)

One of the things that Jax has in abundance is the ability to do labor and now that there's houses damaged from the earthquake, he's got something worth trading. He's not a jack of all trades like Moana but he makes do with what he has and if they've got the tools, he's got the strong back and the know how to do most things that a house needs.

The Inn is the best place to go and see if someone needs work so he hauls his ass up there every morning for breakfast and to offer his services. Now that the days and nights are actually separate and not one long stretch of sunlight that only changes in hue from yellow to red he's feeling a lot better than he has in a month or so; that never-setting sun shit had been getting old and he's happy to see the rain and the sun and the twinkling of the stars and moon at night. It's simple shit, yes, but it's a sign that this place is returning to some sort of normal.

The first two days he parks at the Inn, he doesn't have much to do. It's pouring rain and there's no way he can get anything done when he can't see his hand in front of his face. By the third day, though, not only has the sun come back but it's not so goddamn hot and he thinks he can get a real start on helping get some of the houses back into working order. There's plenty of things he can do that others might not be able to and he knows there's shit that other people are able to do that he can't; Moana's living proof of that.

He's taken to sitting out on the front porch of the Inn when the weather's good, making his offer for labor as people walk in and out.

iii. a good time down on the bayou (river, 4 July - 9 July)

After a long day of fixing roofs and figuring out how best to repair collapsed porches, Jax likes to bathe off down in the river. The days of rain have brought it up a little and it looks a lot better than it had a few weeks ago even though it still needs some more rain to get back up to the levels it'd been before the drought. The water's cool here and flows in a way the water up at the waterfall doesn't so he prefers taking a dunk down here before heading back home.

Sure, he's got a bathtub like everyone else but the dirt and the grime he's been accumulating while working on houses means he'll end up having to clean his tub out four times a week and he doesn't have time for that shit. He'd rather wash off in the river and save the bath for in the morning when he washes his hair and gets his shave.

He's not shy about using the river, either. Plenty of people come down here to bathe and he's hardly the first to strip down and take advantage of the water to cool off after a long day. He ducks under the water and holds his breath for a few long minutes, just letting his mind focus on the sound of his own heartbeat before popping back up, water sluicing down his bare back and arms.

WARNINGS: Please warn in comment headers for sensitive subjects.

The rain had started shortly after the initial quake, a constant downpour counter to the aftershocks trembling through the canyon at-will.  Homes had been destroyed under their own shaking weight or fallen trees, the parched earth quickly flooded and muddy, the river regaining some of its depth.  It's the kind of shit-show Kira had expected after the first quake, his experience of them largely from movies--but this had been so much worse, with no calm blanket of snow to cover all evidence after the fact.

After the aftershocks die for enough time to venture out, the rain is still pouring, the earth still shrugging like it might finish toppling the already ramshackle structures.

There's no telling who else might be trapped in there, without an orderly line of residents and Veronica's list of arrivals.  There's no telling who might have just up and disappeared in the middle of it all.  The injured will go to the hospital, but there will be plenty of people without serious injuries, who still need somewhere dry to sleep, somewhere to check for friends or family, somewhere to feel like they aren't dealing with cracked and flooded homes alone.

It takes most of the afternoon to drag his supplies to the town hall, use a tarp to cross over to the house he and Veronica use for map-making, and set up inside with a sign-in sheet and basic inventory of supplies.  Now he just has to get people passing through to add to both.

Leaving Aurora and Hoshi safe in one of the smaller storage rooms, he pushes himself back out into the rain, telling everyone he meets to bring themselves and what they can salvage to the Town Hall.

[Mingle post for after the earthquake.  Come sign in as not-dead or missing!  Bring your tools and supplies for recovery efforts!  Report loved ones missing or search for them in the crowd!  Post is set up for people to be in and out of the building throughout the week, mark your OTAs accordingly.]

They're there when he wakes up in the morning. Two boxes, sitting at the end of his bed, that weren't there yesterday. He's heard about people being gifted items, supposedly left there by whoever's behind this, but he hasn't experienced that himself yet.

Until right now.

He sits on the end of the bed and opens the first box. Flour, sugar, eggs, what looks like cocoa powder. He can guess what these things are for, he just doesn't know what to do with them. He knows who will, though, so he sets that box aside and reaches for the other one.

A pair of jeans on top. It's a bit warm for them right now, but they're still better than the scrubs, and if he's going to be out working in the woods, he'll want long pants. Next a white t-shirt. Nothing unusual about that. Underneath that...a black-and-red plaid shirt. Now he's sure that someone's messing with him, because that's a bit too specific to be random.

That goes back into the box. It's too warm for that right now anyway. The boots and underwear and socks that he finds in there too though, those he'll use.

Later in the day, after he's eaten and seen to the tasks he has for the day, he makes his way to Claire's house, with the box of baking ingredients, wearing his new clothes minus the flannel, and knocks on the door.

STATUS: Open. THIS IS A MINGLE, have at it, tag around, you know what to do. If you want Finnick, let me know in the comment subject!

He wouldn't actually say it was really hot yet, but it's definitely getting to the sort of temperatures that make Finnick miss swimming. There's no substitute for the sand of a beach underfoot, the reassuring roar of the surf, the taste of salt in the air, but there is at least water here, tumbling down from the waterfall and flowing through the canyon until it disappears into the rocks to the south. And he knows from constantly checking his fish traps that the water is deliciously cool.

He's tested out a few spots along the river for swimming, and it's good to be in the water again, after being kept out of it for so long by the harshness of the winter.  Not swimming doesn't feel right to him, and it never has. He's never spent this long somewhere with a winter this cold, and he can't remember ever going this long without swimming. So Finnick's been testing the water out since before it was probably what most people would consider to be warm enough to swim. It had helped that he and Annie had some gifts to hunt for in the river, but those have long been found, and now it's just for relaxation.

The calmest, most relaxing place he's found so far for swimming in the river is the pool at the foot of the waterfall, where the water plunges into the canyon crisp and cool from the heights of the cliffs. It's deep around the falls, and it's big enough to swim, and Finnick spends most of the hottest parts of the day there.

So whenever he hears someone talking about the heat while he's dropping food off in the village, he suggests they try the waterfall pool. Word's likely to get around, so he won't be entirely surprised to find other people stopping by the falls.

When they do, they're likely to find him swimming around the deep part near the falls, stripped down to his underwear and, from the grin on his face, having the time of his life. It's clear just from looking at him that he's good at this, moving through the water with a confidence and grace more like to a sea-creature than a man. He's in such a good mood that he even calls out to greet many of the people who approach.

Of course, he's not the guardian of the waterfall: everyone's welcome to stop by whether he's there or not. Once or twice, there's even a moose to be seen standing at the edge of the pool taking a long, relaxing drink.

OTA - The Inn (Hail Event)

With the hail showing no signs of letting up, Margaery found herself unable to venture into the woods for her daily walks. It was perilous to go between her house and the barn too often, so the inn was where she spent much of her day. She had a few of the games she received during the gift giving, games that she had been taught and understood. There were also books. With her cow soon to give birth, she read and reread the chapters in her animal care book at how to handle births of that scale.

She at least had tea and something to eat as she watched the hail fall outside. After beating herself for the third time in Solitaire, she glanced up towards one of the other villagers. "Would you like to play with me? I'm still learning a few of these games, so I imagine you will win quite regularly."

May 1st

It had been a shock to him when he'd gone out this morning to chop some wood and had found that he could no longer control the ax like he used to be able to. Concentrating on moving it does nothing but threaten to leave him with a headache that will keep him from being able to do anything all day. Which is tempting, except for the headache part. So he convinces himself to stop trying, and by that point he feels the anger swell up. It had been hard enough to accept that someone had been able to take away so much of his ability, but now they've gone and taken all of it. That will never set well with him.

Thanks to his ten years of purposely not using his powers, he has some practice at doing things without them, and there's an ax and a pile of wood that needs to be turned into firewood. Put those together with the anger he feels right now, and soon enough there's a pile of firewood large enough to fuel one or two fires for a couple of days.

He only stops when the blisters that have formed on his hands threaten to burst, even after he wraps rags around them. The pain kept him going, but also fueled his anger some more. He shouldn't have to worry about a thing like blisters, but here they are. When he returns to the inn in the village, he leaves the rags wrapped around his hands until he gets inside, where he carefully removes the wrappings to take a look at his hands.

He hadn't stopped soon enough. One of the blisters has burst anyway.

May 2nd – 8th

The rest of the week, he stays around the inn and the other buildings in the village, helping however he can around there. The blisters on his hands prevent him from doing his usual task of chopping firewood, and he has a hard time even using a knife, but he'll find something that he can do to help out. He's not living simply off the charity of others. It's been his experience anyway that most people aren't as charitable as they claim to be.

Sweeping, washing dishes, prep work in the kitchen, give him a task to do.

WARNINGS: Drug withdrawal

For awhile, she'd been fine. She'd thought that, maybe, something about landing here in the village had done something to her system, saving her from the nasty effects that the yin-fen left behind. Something about portal travel, or ending up in some alternate time or dimension or wherever the hell they are. Whatever the case, she was pleased to not have to worry about it, to not have to face the facts of her mistakes. But perhaps it had simply been delayed, adrenaline from a series of chaotic events (arriving, the feast and the sicknesses, that thing that she's so sure was a demon attack) keeping her going.

It's caught up with her now. She spends the night tossing and turning in her room at the Inn, unable to fall asleep, unable to bat away the anxiety gnawing at her mind. This place is hard to adjust to, she reasons, and she's used to falling asleep to the sounds of the city outside, and waking up in her beautiful bedroom in the Institute. But the sleeplessness continues, as does the anxiety and agitation, leaving her tired and cranky. The pain begins to set in, and that's when she can't deny it any longer.

This isn't homesickness, and she hasn't caught a cold, either. This is withdrawal from the yin-fen, finally sneaking up on her and making its attack.

For awhile, she stays holed up in her room, buried beneath a pile of blankets. Every part of her burns and aches; her bones feel bruised and brittle, her skin like there's been a fire ignited beneath its surface. Still, she shivers like she can't seem to get warm, like there's ice in her very core. The worst part is, she knows if the drug was in reach, she'd take it in an instance.

There's nothing worse than growing up strong, becoming a force to reckon with, a resilient force of nature, just to have one mistake give reminder of how weak you really are. Dependent on something that anyone could hold over her head.

After awhile, she emerges from her room, looking a lot like she's come down with something — color drained from her face, dark circles beneath her eyes, appearing ragged and worn. Bringing one of her blankets with her, she builds a fire in the fireplace downstairs, pulling a chair right up in front of it and curling up in a cocoon of fabric. It might be the very beginning of May, too warm out to warrant a fire, but all she wants is to warm up, to feel a little bit better.

He's hardly the first to arrive for a shift in the kitchens, but those ahead of him have sunk into the the search for the building's chairs and tables--the kitchen is open and empty, the tavern devoid even of stools.  It's another wrench in the works, one of the smaller reasons for routine to fall apart to reactions, and Kira thinks they'll have a better time of solving it if someone gets the fire up in the stove and everyone eats first.
The damage assessment has people upstairs, people on the path wandered out of their homes.  Kira hadn't come through his own dining room on the way out, so he can't say if he's missing furniture or not, and his growling stomach doesn't much care.
It's when he slips out the side door of the kitchen in search of fresh kindling that he finds it.  Every missing table and chair standing in the grass, laden with platters of food, buckets of bottled drinks, carafes of what he finds to be coffee sending steam from their lids.  There are pastries with the coffee, roasted fowl gleaming golden on the next table, between ham hocks shining with honeyed glaze, large fruits piled among wreaths of fresh flowers.
Dotting the tables are jars, more jars than they've had since he arrived, flickering with short candles.  Garlands accent the tables, carry from them into the trees, a web of spring decoration with a feast at its center.  Between the platters are smaller plates, small chocolates laid out under decorative drizzle.
"Hey!" he calls back through the door, blinking several times to make sure the sight doesn't shimmer away into the air.  "I found the furniture, and I don't think we'll need to cook anything today."

Crouching down cautiously, he'd been careful in case there were new rats in these ones, but a quick glance inside the first and then the second yields delighted surprise and then an immediate plan. Really, it looks like a baker and a drug dealer have decided to woo him, given that one box is filled with rolling papers, enough pot to satisfy the village's population twiceover, and butter. When he opens the second box, he finds all the ingredients to match a large batch of chocolate chip cookies and cool milk.

Instantly, he wonders if this isn't some sign from the universe. "Are you trying to get me stoned?" he questions the heavens, but he thinks the reality is going to be very different. Given everything that's happened lately, he absolutely believes that people deserve a break and what better break than cookies, pot, and potentially just a few pot-cookie combinations?

He commandeers the kitchen in the inn and gets to work, recalling old recipes from uni about how to properly mix the butter and the marijuana to make sure that it's baked into the cookies properly, making a clean batch and very clear labels. While they bake, he rolls the remaining drugs into joints, and tries not to think about how he's basically about to become a drug dealer to the whole village.

At least it's not utopium. After that night with Major, he's ruling out scientific drug-taking for a while, yet. Soon, the cookies are freshly done and he's got everything ready, so he tapes up a sign on the box so that it sits in one of the chairs at the inn, an arrow pointing outside towards town hall.

A routine has been slowly established: wake up at first light, comfortably and warmly nestled in Cassian's arms; begrudgingly force herself from their safety and from the bed; prepare for the day, sometimes with him if he feels like waking when she does; go to the Inn, visit Kira if he's there to check on him; if he's there, talk about their previous day, maybe have tea, maybe just sit and mope together; study the map on the wall and determine what new intel needs to be added. She hasn't yet begun to venture out to the boundaries of the town, not yet, but that day is fast approaching. It isn't that she's necessarily looking for an escape (the motivation to do so has waned she since's found Cassian, an underlying fear that if they do try to leave, they won't be able to do so together). It's more that it gives her something to do, something familiar and something like normalcy.

There's no threat of the Empire here. There's no planet killer, there's no Man in White. But she can't shake the anxiety from the back of her mind, where it's made its home. It's a constant gnawing at her gut, an ache in her side - a shroud stitched of darkness and fear and self-preservation. It makes her sometimes pull away from Cassian when he holds her, ignoring the pain, the hurt that flashes in his eyes when she does. It makes her withdraw into herself into silence, despite her tongue's protestations of wanting to move. It makes her lose herself in the crudely drawn map for hours at a time, and it's only the ache in her shoulders that reminds her it's time to go home.

For Claire
She's trying to plot the path she'll take when the expedition finally begins, but she's finding herself distracted by everything, unable to concentrate. She collapses into a nearby chair, fingers pinching the bridge of her nose to will away the pain that's beginning to split into her skull. A heavy sigh the weight of a boulder bursts from her mouth as she closes her eyes, trying to regain the focus she's lost.

For Sansa
She's lost in the imaginary expedition when she hears the distinct sound of slow, hobbling footsteps. There's a light thud as a body falls into a chair. The sounds are enough to draw Jyn's eyes away, for a moment, to see a young woman - girl? - sitting nearby, looking rather frail and possibly even injured. Jyn first notes the burning auburn cascading down her shoulders, then the pain-stricken contortion on her face. The part of her that wants to focus on the map tells her to ignore the girl, it's none of her business. The part of her that remembers the kindness Finnick and Kira showed her after her arrival makes her expression soften as she asks:

He was only slightly hopeful her and Kol would return, hope had never really gotten him far in life. So he went on like all was normal, purposely navigating away from questions of Jo or Kol, at least with Kol he was used to people not seeing the vampire around, but Jo was a known person in the little community. He knew he would have to handle it in time, but for now he wanted a sense of normalcy, so he returned to the woods daily felling trees and hunting.

Today, he had met with Thor with splitting some logs. The sight of the god always raised his spirits a bit, he knew he had been lacking in leaving tribute but he had been just to tired of late to go looking for more goats.

"Truly?" He asked in response to something the man had spoke. Lifting the axe up once more about to swing down hard but, faster than he could react he felt something at first tingle then everything shifted. A ball had floated up beside the axe, the crackle of eletricity flowing into head of the axe, and down the outside of the wood into Thorfinn's hands and down his arms before he could even drop the axe.

He didn't remember screaming, only the agony of the energy surging through him, at the same time that he screamed the fire swirled around him escaping with a moment of loss of control. Luckily the flames didn't last long. His knee's buckled as he started to tumble down, his brown eyes wide as his mind tried to process what just happened, as he looked at Thor as he started to fall.

"...What the fuck, Thor."

Had he offended with a lack of goat tribute?

House 8
The next thing Thorfinn knew he was in his house, laying in bed, the ends of his hair were charred, as was his tunic sleeves, Kate was going to be so pissed at him. He wasn't sure how long he had been out cold but forcing himself to sit up, his arms ached in a horrible way. Lifting his right arm he saw the strangest marks he had ever seen before, just under the burns on both wrists were patterns going up to his elbows, it looked like lightning laced over his mesh of scars.

He tipped his head a bit, his head still ached like the rest of his body. Realizing he was home he knew someone had to of brought him home. But who? Was it Thor? He shifted to try and get out of bed.

Feb 15th, The Inn
Thorfinn knew he was supposed to rest, but he was so bad at resting. It was around noon when he made his way across the back yard into the inn, with a small box under his aching arm. He moved over to Jo's book's despite the pain, he leaned over the table, setting down the box and opened it to a blank page. He started to jot a note in runes on the page.

What was different was that he had the sleeveless shirt from the summer on, his cloak just draped over his shoulders so his new found Lichtenberg scars were noticeable, but what stood out more than that, his long hair was gone. He had taken one of his knives when he woke in the morning and sheered the locks off. Cut unevenly and badly leaving only about an inch and a half in some places, and two in others it was a bad cut, but he had tried. The charcoal in his hand was a little unsteady, his nerves weren't acting as they should, he had been shaking a bit but not from fear, the longer he stood the worse his headache got as well, but Jo would have wanted the book written in.

[Arrival > Inn]

It wasn't exactly a frightening experience surfacing in the fountain and realising he wasn't dead, or even in Ireland, for that matter. He wasn't back in the City either, so for a short few seconds to blink the water out of his vivid blue eyes, Caius glanced around. Needless to say, he knew well enough he wasn't there.

So where the hell was he? There was a pack on his back, and the scrubs weren't anything he could understand.

As he climbed out, something scraped against his forearm, leaving a deep enough gouge to bleed pretty badly, made only temporarily better when the water rushed off him. Immediately, the cooler temperature set into his bones and by the time he reached the Inn, he was trembling.

[Around the Village - Evening]

After finding out that the multiverse snagged him again, it was time to do some exploring. The whole situation was oddly familiar in that each time he took on a new identity and landed in the place where he'd live for the next decade, he did the same thing. So off he went to learn as much as he could. Create a mental map, if so to speak. Like the City, there wasn't much in the way of getting answers.

Until answers did become available, Caius looked up after the sun went down and marveled at something the City didn't have. Stopped right in the middle of a pathway, he stared up at sky while lightening danced amidst an aurora of blueish green ribbons of lights.

It was breathtaking.

I. Drowned rat

This is wrong. One more item on the list of things in his life that have not turned out the way he wanted them to. His first thought is of the fountain in Paris, but that was ten years and three countries ago. Wherever this fountain is, it's not in Paris, and it's definitely not the woods behind his house in Poland.

The first thing he notices when he pulls himself out of the fountain – other than that he was right, it's neither Paris nor Poland – is how cold it is. To-the-bone cold, and he's wet and only dressed in –

What the hell is he wearing?

II. Grumpy rat

He's finally calmed down a little (enough to stop causing any more bruises, anyway) and had it suggested to him that he might want to start at the inn. Or maybe he'd just been told that to make him someone else's problem. He could see it happening that way.

He's not an idiot though. He knows how important it is to find somewhere warm first, with the weather being what it is, and if the inn is where people are, it stands to reason that it's also somewhere warm. Maybe somewhere to start getting some answers, too. There's somewhere he needs to be, and this is not it.

He pushes open the door to the inn and finds himself a table at the back while trying to draw too much attention to himself. (Which is probably hard, given how obnoxiously bright his clothes are.) He sets the backpack down on the table and starts to examine its contents. A black coat, good, and the denim overalls are still a bit ridiculous, but at least he has some options other than what he's got on.
