This morning, our intrepid villagers awoke to a surprise of the nicer kind: A bundle of clothing left at the foot of their bed, tied with a bow. There is also a note: Put on your new outfit and join the festivities in the corn field next to the inn.

You may be thinking, what corn field next to the inn? The one that sprung up fully-mature overnight, of course.

In the middle of the field, villagers will find an autumn feast: Tables piled with harvest time food and drink, warm and rustic decorations, the day's sunshine fending off any chill in the air.

Tuck in and enjoy, villagers, but take note: Things often look different in the dark, and you might be one of them.

"I don't think it would hurt to try for the latter but prepare for the former," Alex suggests, maybe just a tinge morosely.

If they wanted someone to dance for the amusement of the Observers, they would have grabbed Verity instead of him.

"I take it you're no exception to my observation about us being chosen to be here," he notes. "You sound like you're speaking from experience about unraveling these sorts of things."

"Oh, I've only single-handedly identified the true name and origins of a figure from legend made manifest. I suppose I do have some sort of experience in unraveling the unfathomable." He doesn't try to keep the smugness from his expression, either. He's rather proud of having identified the true name of the Venatori's 'Elder One', after all.

"And I agree we should be prepared, regardless. It just so happens we will also need food and shelter. How fortunate the two coincide."

"And here I am with just one series of petrifaction-based murders and a lycanthropy outbreak in a continent already designed to kill everyone in it under my belt," Alex says, with enough self-awareness in his wryness for it to sound more like he's making fun of the sheer ridiculousness of his life than bragging.

Really, it does sound a lot less impressive than Dorian's story. At least when he leaves out the body disposal, gorgons and talking mice, anyway.

Dorian's expression is playful as he shakes his head, slight smile curling his lips as he chuckles. "You really ought to try harder for impression, or at least embroider the truth a bit."

That being said. "How does one approach a 'lycanthropy outbreak' though?"

"The usual epidemic containment protocol- identify patient zero and other infected, quarantine them when they're most likely to spread the virus, and provide the vaccine to anyone who does get exposed. The vaccine's kind of worse than the bite," he answers, lifting up the sleeve of his shirt to show off the scar of what looks like a rather gruesome mauling.

"Better than the alternative after that, though. The virus is a hundred percent fatal. Imagine physical transformation without magic, and what that does to a non-therianthropic lifeform."

Discussing terrible viruses over appetizers. Yep. This is why Alex doesn't get invited to parties.

"I'm not familiar with that term, 'vaccine', but given context, I assume this is some sort of...preventative?" He looks impressed as he takes a sip from his drink. "I didn't realize lycanthropic transferal could be prevented. That's useful."

He nodded. While he'd never actually encountered a werewolf, they certainly weren't unheard of, and several books had been written on the topic.

"I can imagine being 'put out of one's misery' would be a sufficient descriptor."
