The urgent warnings come from villagers returning south from the lake: a creature twice the size of a man, antlered and voracious. Larger than any they've seen on the plains, stalking its way to the main village. Some might have their own names for this hunger in a skin of shadow; others might remember that it was the first to claim a life, in their village's short history.

Whatever context one has for it, best to secure all pets and loved ones before it arrives. With weapons and food stores at the inn, the call goes out to gather — And to bring back any tools, because there's no telling what doors and windows can do to stop such a creature.

Kamala doesn't do anything that sensible. She just finds a place where she can sit steadily and exhales. This is the kind of thing she needed. It was way too stuffed in there. "Yeah. This is actually a surprisingly big roof."

Steph settles down, making herself comfortable. The shingles kind of make her think of home, not the flat concrete roofs of downtown.

"It's the angle. Really increases the real estate."

Kamala chuckles softly at that. She's thrust back in a horror movie so the mention of real estate is kind of surreal in a good way. "Yeah? We'll have to let our real estate agent know."

Steph snorts a laugh.

"Not a chance. I don't know about you, but I'm a squatter. They might start charging us rent."

[morphogenia]

"I'm a squatter living with another squatter who steals dogs so." Kamala shrugs her shoulders. "Rent is the last thing I need too. I'm not even old enough to sign contracts or something. I don't actually know how that works."

“Me neither,” she shrugs. “I didn’t expect to be living on my own until like, my 30s. Although,” she adds as a thought occurs to her, “if I am dead I guess I’ll never have to worry about apartment hunting.”

Kamala is nodding along up until the mention of death. Her expression falls immediately. She can't hide her concern even if she wanted to. "Why would you say that? You're right here."

Steph shrugs like it's not a big deal. If she keeps acting like it isn't, she figures, eventually it won't be. Gotta fake it 'till you make it.

"Yeah, but before I was here I was bleeding to death, probably internally, and shot in the chest. I don't care what kind of magic powers you have, that, to my definition, is dead."

Kamala stares at her in stunned silence. That's quite a picture she painted for her. It kind of makes her sick. "I guess it is." She finally manages. Her lips press into a thin line before she can manage to say anything else. "This is the part where you tell me not to say sorry or be really sad about this, right? I've known you for five minutes and this is still really upsetting to hear. I can't pretend it's not."

"Sorry." She hunches her shoulders defensively and looks away. She didn't mean to hurt this girl, honest she didn't. She was only thinking about herself and her own pain.

"I got better," she offers in what is unmistakably a Monty Python impression.

[morphogenia]

That joke lands with Kamala. She laughs softly before the context comes back to her. She shakes her head. "Don't be sorry. You're the one who was suffering. I just wish that didn't go through something like that. It's awful."

And it was so, so much worse than Steph even said. She shoves her arms in the top of her overalls as though she's cold. With the clouds lowering the light Kamala might not be able to make out the still-healing scars covering her arms, wrists and hands.

"It doesn't hurt anymore." Her hands ache some when she uses them too much, but that's nothing.

"It's fine, really. I mean, there's plenty of stuff about it that's not fine, but I don't actually mind being dead as long as it doesn't hurt. I... needed to get away from Gotham anyway.

[morphogenia]

"Not the best way to leave a city." Kamala comments idly, but it isn't flippant. She's sincere about being heartbroken for her sake. It's plain to see how sad she is. Since it's Kamala, she at least tries to put a positive spin on it. She gives the smallest of smiles. "But, at least you're here? A second chance at life.... I thought that only happened to superheroes."

Steph shrugs. She’s still not sure she wants a second chance.

“Hey, as long as it’s not Gotham,” she retorts flatly. “Were-whatevers included, this is a way safer place to live.”

[morphogenia]

They are literally under attack right now. Kamala agrees secretly. This place is definitely safer than Reims. How bad is her place that she thinks this is a step up? "Seriously? What's Gotham actually like?"

She hums thoughtfully as she tries to think of a succinct way of explaining it.

"Is your world's Detroit still really bad for crime?"

[morphogenia]

"Yep." Kamala admits with a sigh. They really need to station some heroes there already or more. Who even knows because ~comics~ are all over the place. "Wait. You live in the Detroit of your Earth? Wow. No wonder you want out." And can't afford to run for the hills.

“Oh, no,” Steph corrects her immediately.

“Gotham makes Detroit look like Hawaii. I could wish I lived in Detroit.”

[morphogenia]

She can scarcely comprehend that. New Jersey is filled with weird and terrifying stuff, but that's real world scary. "Yeahhh... so when we get out of this mess? We're totally moving you somewhere else. I know we've only known each other for five minutes, but like my brother is super into charity stuff. He'll find a group that will help and/or your family leave the place that literally killed you because no. You're not doing that."

Steph chuckles half-heartedly at the offer.

"I'd love to take you up on that, but I'm still not sure I'm gonna get that chance. Whatever this place really is, however we were brought here, this is clearly a Special Circumstance Resurrection. I'm not making any long term plans until I know if it's gonna stick or not."

It would be nice, though. To be able to live somewhere so far away from Gotham it's literally in another universe.
