[MINGLE] Crab Boil

WHO: Mark Watney
WHERE: 6I Inn front lawn
WHEN: 21 June 2018, afternoon/evening and onward
OPEN TO: ALL - MINGLE
NOTES: A few thinsgs: You may assume your character helped set up; There are tubers in pot with the red salt, negating the warmth effect; The list of of potluck dishes is here; The list of local provisions is here

The weather is great, the sun is starting to dip toward the horizon, and it's pleasantly mild. Time for an (extremely) old-fashioned low country boil.

We've got two small fire pits built out in front of the inn, each with a massive pot filled with loads of vegetables — corn, carrots, potatoes, onions — and of course the rainbow crabs Finnick and Annie discovered not long after we arrived here. We've even got salt, if you can believe it, although the red salt in this place is pretty spicy and usually makes me sweat, so I've only put it in the one pot, and then set a bowl of it out for garnishing.

Tables and chairs have been brought out from inside, a couple of them set aside specifically for piles of plates, bowls, cups and whatever potluck provisions the rest of the village brings.

She feels like her body has gone up at least a few degrees, burning with a fever the likes of which she hasn't felt since a rebar had gone clean through her body, leaving her to fight off an infection. There's no such battle now, yet her body apparently is treating the food equally as it had the weapon.

When the water is given to her, she manages to swallow three gulpfuls, but it doesn't do anything. More, and it's only making her stomach ache, but not helping the burn at all. What is she supposed to do with spice? She recalls Samberley saying it once. Right, yes, of course. He'd talked about the hot peppers and how the only thing that had helped was...

"Milk," she says, hating that she seems so demanding. "Cheese, yogurt, anything dairy," she says. "I don't know that the water is going to help."

She watches Miss Peggy carefully, poised to go to her aid either to hold her or run for something else - more water, more assistance, anything. She's on the verge of asking if maybe sipping the water might be better, swishing the water around her mouth before swallowing, or maybe spit it out to get the traces of whatever it is out of her mouth.

Then Peggy speaks. Kate nods and puts her plate down. "I'll be back as soon as I can. Maybe try and wash your mouth with the water."

Then she's off, moving quickly to the Inn and its kitchen. Milk might be better, she thinks. Something liquid as opposed to cheese. She's not sure why Miss Peggy asks for it, but then, Miss Peggy knows many things that Kate doesn't.

Kate returns as soon as she can, skirts gathered in one hand and a jug in the other.

"Miss Peggy, here."

She leans over to rinse her mouth with the water, turning to spit over the side of the table in an utterly graceless display that she doesn't particularly care about so long as she can get that hot, spicy taste out of her mouth. It's so bloody hot, honestly, she's not sure how anyone can do this.

She's sure she used to be able to feel her lips, but that's old hat now. Her whole stomach feels like it's actually been lit aflame and she's just waiting for the dynamite to explode.

Thankfully, Kate's back soon enough and Peggy reaches greedily for the milk, making sure to pour it into a glass, though the entirety is chugged within seconds. "Thank you," she breathes, when she's sure it won't be awful and like a dragon's breath. It's still hot, it's still awful, and she's still sweating, but she doesn't feel like she might be sick. "I've no idea what did that, I don't even see any spice on the plate."
