[McGarrett House - November 17]

It had been just over a month since her arrival and she was still hoping that this place was some sort of bad dream but as the days passed, it was looking less and less likely that was the case. What made this place worse for Mary is there was no electricity or modern technology and it had been a rough adjustment for her. One positive thing was that her brother was here and they had found a house to call their own though living together hadn't been without it's difficulties. Mary had a more laid back way of doing thing than her brother and their argument about appropriate shower times was still in progress.

Since the ice storm had moved in, Mary was considering this place closer to hell. She was permanently cold all of the time and she had cabin fever which was making her fairly miserable. Currently, Mary was curled up in front of the fireplace, trying to stop the constant shivering. She didn't really know too much about keeping a fire but she wanted this one to be bigger so she picked up a log and tossed it on the fire. "This is ridiculous." She muttered to herself, curling up tighter, wrapping her arms around her legs. "I'm going to die of hypothermia!"

[The Village and the Inn - November 20]

Once the weather lessened a bit, Mary couldn't wait to get out of the house. She had nothing in mind other than just getting some fresh air. Mary headed into the village, taking her time as she walked around. Eventually she found herself at the Inn and she went inside just to see who was around.

"You might if you keep loading the wood on the fire like that," he said as he walked into the room carrying a large pot almost full of water, his intention to place it over the fire and allow it boil for tea and then to make soup. He'd caught a rabbit the day before and it needed to be cooked. Add in some of the vegetables he'd stocked up on and it should last them a couple of days.

Once they had moved into the house, Steve started to gather supplies. In retrospect he should have been more focused on certain things and a bit less in others, but then again he hadn't anticipated an ice storm either. They have wood. Enough to keep the fire lit for a few days, but only if they kept it at a slow and low burn.

"Get up and move around some, that should help warm you up." Steve gave her a brief glare before trying to figure out how to get the pot in the fireplace now with an extra log of wood in there. "There's things you can be doing instead of sitting there complaining. Moving around serves two purposes, keeping you warm and get some of the chores out of the way."

"It's not that bad, Mary." Still, he put the pot down by the fire, there was no way it was going to fit without shifting things a bit, and he moved to the other room briefly and came back with his coat, wrapping it around her shoulders. "Here, this should help."

"This weather is likely to last a couple of months, but I arrived at the end of what felt like summer. I expect this part of the world just gets four seasons, instead of our normal of one." Taking up the poker and another fireplace tool, Steve shifted the logs on the fire. He'd set things up earlier for a slow burn, not allowing a lot of airflow under, adjusting that now, the fire started burning brighter as it was feed more oxygen. They'd burn through their wood faster but this would warm the room more too. While there, he set up the tools for the pot and then hung that over the flames. "Careful not to tip the pot. There's enough water in that to put things out and make it so we can't restart anything until it dries out." After a second he pointed at Mary. "Better yet, leave the fire to me. If you need it warmer in here let me know." It wasn't that he didn't trust but... He didn't trust her with this.

Getting a good look at her, really seeing her misery, his shoulders fell and his bad mood dissipated. "Once the water boils we can make some tea with the berries and herbs, and then start making rabbit stew for dinner. Both should help warm you up as well. We'll be okay, Mary. I've been trained for this kind of challenge."

It wasn't that Steve wasn't miserable, he certainly was, he just didn't feel the need to dwell on how he was feeling. Part of that was SEAL training and part of that was just how he coped - keep busy, keep moving and keep distracted.

Raising an eyebrow, he smiled at his sister. "Some people even enjoy winters. I know, it's a foreign concept to us, but it's true. When I went to school on the East Coast, winter activities were more popular than the summer. Including winter camping." He looked around the room and then pointedly back at her. "Trust me, this is the Hilton compared to that, even without it's electricity and technology."

Fusing with the fire and his pot of water a little bit more, he then turned back to her, giving her a disbelieving look. "If you knew so much about fires, why didn't you know that you just had to create ways for the air to get into it, to make it generate more heat?" Then his voice grew a bit more cranky, he hated being called a control freak - not that he didn't know he was one, but he just couldn't help it. In his mind it was optimal to be quick and efficient. "And, I'm not a control freak, I just know the better way to do things. Do them right and I wouldn't have to fix it."

After another moment of fusing with the fire he shook his head. "You aren't missing, so I'm guessing not. We stayed in better contact after you went home, although not in regards to everything, but still, if you'd have gotten kidnapped again, I think you would have told me about it when you got back. Especially if I was some how there with you. Unless of course they wiped your memories of here, but still we kept in contact more often than you've been here." It was one of those things he couldn't explain. Part of him thought Mary was brainwashed to not remember the previous year, but he couldn't think of a good reason for that either.

"Only to you. Did you know that Danny would rather be in Jersey than... What had he called Hawaii...?" Pausing in his action he thinks a moment then grins and snaps his fingers. "Oh yeah, 'A Pineapple Infested Hellhole." Laughing, he shakes his head. "He didn't even like the beach. Kept a postcard of Jersey in the sun-visor even." He missed Danny. A lot. Giving his head another small shake he grins at his sister. "If you know what you're doing, you don't get frostbite. Trust me, Mary, we'll be fine in the house."

"I'm not thanking you. We need to make the wood last until this blows over and we don't know how long that will be. Burning too hot now only means you're going to freeze later." Rolling his eyes, he turned away as she started lecturing him on being a control freak. "Tell you what, you find a better way to do things, you let me know and we'll talk. Until then, we do it my way. Or do you think you know how to avoid that frostbite as well?"

Frowning as he moved over to sit beside her, he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her in close, giving her a light kiss on the temple. "You're not a pain in my ass, Mary. You're my little sister and it's supposedly normal for us to get on each other's nerves. I wished you could have stayed in O'ahu, I liked having you close, but it just wasn't safe." He, and his team, were working to make the islands a safer place but the problem was, the people who his father feared would go after him and Mary twenty years ago were still there. Mary was all he had left and he'd never forgive himself if she got hurt because of what he was doing. He gave her another tight squeeze as he deadpanned out, "I'll have to take your word for it on that one."
