001 ][ i see a ghost out on the water, i swear it has my face

WHO: Elena Gilbert
WHERE: Fountain > Inn > Around the Village
WHEN: Nov 18 - 20th
OPEN TO: All
WARNINGS: References to death and drowning

FOUNTAIN - Nov 18th

This had all happened before, this feeling. She was floating, waiting for the darkness to swallow her, only this time she was alone. That made it better, somehow. More peaceful. She didn't have the burden of watching her parents drown with her because of her mistakes, her selfishness.

Her lungs still burned as they screamed for air, and it was the shock of a sudden temperature difference that brought her back briefly from her oxygen-deprived haze. The water had been cold in the river below Wickery Bridge, but not this cold. Not by a long-shot. It felt like a thousand daggers were suddenly stabbing into her skin through the fabric of her drenched clothes as it sucked every last bit of warmth out of her insides.

It was hard to tell which way was up, the depth of the water disorienting, but she felt a gentle push as if she were being guided, and she managed to find the strength for a few weak kicks toward the surface.

Hopefully, someone would be nearby to give her a hand when hers managed to break the surface of the water, despite the storm. At least her bright red scrubs make her easier to see that she might be otherwise.

INN - Nov 19th

With the ice storm still going strong outside, Elena opts to stay inside where it's warm, at least for today. She's got the gist of what's going on, though she's still not convinced that she isn't dead and this is some weird sort of limbo or...whatever.

That said, everything feels very real and there are people to meet and talk to, so she forces herself to stay on the ground floor, trying to eat and drink what she can to get her strength back up and talk to as many people as she can.

They're all in this together, after all.

OUT AND ABOUT - Nov 20th

After the storm clears, Elena takes it upon herself to do a bit of exploring. It's starting to sink in that this is all very real, that she may never make it home, and that nearly everyone she's ever cared about would have very likely all passed by now. If she's being honest with herself, it would have happened sometime in the interim of her fitful sleep after her arrival, but the sheer amount of loss is just too mind-numbing to process all at once.

This is something in her face that she can focus on, at least. Getting a lay of the land and comfortable with her surroundings was important. She couldn't know what might be coming but she could try to be prepared.

She walks along the river, taking in the sights with her hands tucked into the pockets of her peacoat, making sure not to steer too far away or lose sight of the town itself. There would be time for that later, and getting lost in the cold didn't sound like a very good idea.

Beverly readjusts her grip, wrapping one arm around the girl's waist as her other hand slings her bag over her shoulder. Hopefully her patient has strength enough to manage her bag since they haven't removed it, but if not Beverly is capable. Giving as much support as she can at the moment, Beverly helps pull her charge up. Once they are both on their feet, she starts them off towards the Inn, careful to keep pace with Elena and not much faster. They might both need to get somewhere dry, but there's no good to be found in making Elena stumble.

Eventually, they make it inside and as the warm air from the fires hits her, Beverly shivers. "Come on. Let's find a room and get you changed into something dry. There should be something that passes for clothes inside your bag." As for a towel to dry off with, Beverly digs inside her own bag for the one she packed and holds it out. "In the meantime, try to dry off. I won't have you getting sick."

It isn't long before they do find a place for Elena to change. Digging out the dry set of clothes in the girl's backpack, she offers to leave the room to let Elena change in peace. Whether having help or not would make her feel better, Beverly is willing to oblige. Whatever the case, once Elena is closer to being warm and dry than she was, Beverly leads her back to the fire to help her long hair start to dry off, too.

"Are you hungry? I can see if there's soup ready."

Beverly is still fairly wet herself, though not quite as much so as Elena, but she won't be getting properly dry and warm until she's back at the house. However long that ends up being.

Elena's right about that and for all that Beverly doesn't usually sacrifice her own health too badly, unlike some people she knows, she does have something of a protective streak. The last thing she wants is to leave Elena alone before the young woman is fully ready.

"I'll be all right for a little bit longer," she answers. "I have to go back out in that storm to reach the house I'm staying in anyway. I just wanted to be sure you'd be all right before I left." She's not the type to abandon anyone, least of all someone who so clearly needs her help.

"Don't be," Beverly assures her quickly. "There's a group of us who are taking turns keeping an eye on the fountain for the winter. None of us put it past the Observers to toss someone in the fountain during a snowstorm. Or icestorm." And given Elena's arrival, it seems they were right to think so.

"Besides, I was on my way to check the supply closet here anyway, so it's not like you asked me to do anything unusual." She was already heading here anyway.

However, she is cold and wet, so she turns to point out the acting Innkeeper. "If you need anything, a room or food or anything else, that's Kate. She'll help you. And if you need me, I'm one of the doctors here and I'd be happy to help. I just live back across the village." She'll give very detailed directions to House 20, so Elena can find her if she ever needs her.
