All Your Actin', Your Thin Disguise, All Your Perfectly Delivered Lines
WHO: Peeta Mellark
WHERE: Village in general, bakery, riverbank
WHEN: June 8, 9, and 10
OPEN TO: Anyone
WARNINGS: It's Peeta, so there's always possibilities of the Games coming up, especially now
STATUS: Open
( June 8, Village )
When he'd woken up that morning, it had been with his heart hammering in his chest and a barely contained panic. The symptoms weren't at all unfamiliar to him after a year: a nightmare, a bad one, the kind that made it impossible to ever think things could be good again, and he turned to look at Katniss like he always did to reassure himself that they were okay, that they were safe (relatively, at least), and-
She wasn't there.
He hadn't panicked at first; sometimes she woke up before him and went out to do different things. Sometimes the hunting or tracking was better in the early day for reasons he didn't understand. But she'd always show up for lunch, at least long enough to grab something she could eat as she moved if she didn't stay for an actual meal, and this time she didn't... He'd left Jacob in the bakery to go check the house and see if she was there, and that was when he'd found that almost all traces of her had vanished. There was only one set of the clothing and supplies that people carried with them up from the fountain, only one scrubs top. The bow and arrows she'd been shaping were still there but nothing that had been supplied to them. As much as Katniss liked the woods, she wouldn't have packed up everything and run away to them, not without giving something away.
All of that means that Peeta goes into a mild frenzy and immediately into search and rescue mode, crutches be damned. Katniss is far from the most social person in the village, but she's been there long enough to still be familiar to most people, and anyone he runs into is likely going to be a target for that question of Where is she? whether he knows them or not. His first target is, of course, the inn and anyone there, but he spirals out around the village as well as he can while still being limited in mobility, getting more panicked as the day drags on.
( June 9, Bakery )
He can't search the woods in his condition and he's angry about that on a level no one in the village has seen from him, but he's not stealthy to begin with and a broken leg, even one that's mostly healed, makes him even worse. There's still two weeks, give or take, before the rigid brace can come off his leg and he can drop the crutches, and while he's gotten pretty good at dealing with them in the village, that's still somewhere with places for him to stop and sit and rest and convenient water and loads of other things. There is literally just nothing he can do right now that other people can't do better than him, so Peeta is pouring that anger and energy he has into doing something that's at least productive, mixing up, rolling out, and cutting down batches of pasta which he hangs to dry on a series of branches he'd carefully washed before using. It's very basic, just flour, water, and a little salt, but it's more food for people to eat and something to say "thank you" to everyone who wanted to help him or even commiserate with him. Even worried and angry he wasn't about to make things worse for the rest of the village residents, not when they all needed each other to get through this.
( June 10, River )
Two solid nights of terror have taken a toll on Peeta and he knows it's not really going to get any easier, though he also knows he'll reluctantly get used to it the longer it goes, and he just needs a day away from the normal haunts he'd established within the village. In case something happens, though, he's not gone all that far: just down to the river, not near the waterfall since that's the most popular area, but downstream from it a little to enjoy the cooler air around the moving water. The way it's drained reminds Peeta a little too much of when the Gamemakers had drained the stream in the 74th Games to herd them towards Cato and the finale, but it has uncovered a small cluster of rocks that make good seating for someone who can't swim. He's brought his pencils and one of the books he's working on to continue his project, the one that's a record of all the residents. The pages are opened to a certain entry and as the water swirls by he carefully begins embellishing it, adding more words and details to the sketch there, slowly and lovingly. Katniss' entry, of course; she almost looks as if she's staring at him from the page. He's entirely wrapped up in his work and oblivious to anyone coming up on him.

( June 8, The Inn)
Moana was working on something new. She had a fair number of leaves, stalks and threads laid out over the table as well as fabric from some of the clothes that had been given to her in her pack. She'd taken to wearing the dress she made since it was designed to be worn during this sort of heat. It was far more durable than cotton.
Itiiti spotted Peeta first and paused in his small circles to Oink at him. His nose wiggled and his head ducked before running head first into Moana's ankle. "Itiiti!" She called out in a frustrated tone before turning to see Peeta. "You... okay?" He didn't look okay and when he asked, where is she, he earned a blank look from the island princess.
"Where is who?"
no subject
"She's a little taller than you, dark hair, gray eyes. She doesn't talk much, she's really good with a bow." A simple description, but it should be enough for anyone to recognize her if they'd seen her. And Peeta was clearly desperate for any word on her whereabouts and condition.
no subject
"She's not... I mean, you haven't seen her?" Moana felt an uncomfortable feeling gathering in her stomach. She thought of Jyn, how the woman had vanished without a trace. Moana missed her and she could only hope that she was somewhere safe; somewhere with Cassian so she wasn't alone.
"Should we look for her?" Moana was also ignoring Itiiti now.

And he hesitated when she asked the question, looking down. "I want to, but..." The crutches. The crutches made everything so much harder.

She'd mostly go in order to make sure that Katniss didn't shoot Itiiti. Pig was not going to be on the menu if she had something to say about it.
"That way you stay here. I'll be back in a few hours." She looked down at her work. "If you want something to focus on I was making a basket for fish." She pointed down to the leaves and stalks she had on the table.

They're just lucky that Johanna keeps her weapons sheathed away or someone would have managed to get themselves a face full of a sharp edge. She lets loose, getting ready to shout at the idiot who isn't minding where he's going when she actually pays attention to the person in front of her and sees Peeta looking like he's in a desperate, emotional panic. Rolling her eyes, Johanna already sees where this is going. The only time Katniss and Peeta get all frantic and desperate is when something is happening to the other.
"What happened to her?" she asks, bending down to unlatch her boots and get out her axe, figuring that her day just took a new turn, but hey, at least she's got hobbies, right?
no subject
Peeta's not even paying attention to the fact that he'd nearly fallen on his face in his effort to stop suddenly on crutches when he'd spotted Johanna, nor on the fact that she'd almost shanked him with an axe. There's far more important problems right now. "The clothes she came in with are gone, so's her bag - did she go into the woods for hunting?"
no subject
"You're the one who obsessively watches her every move, when's the last time you saw her? Or did you piss her off enough to send her running?" Johanna deadpans, giving him a pointed look.
no subject
He can't even argue her words, though he does flush at them. He does watch every move she makes, even obsessively. It's not like it's a secret all over Panem that Peeta Mellark, the Baker's Boy, is totally, utterly crazy over Katniss Everdeen, a girl who barely ever strung three words together unprompted to anyone but her family and Gale. But part of that he can definitely object to. "I didn't say anything to her! Or do anything! I woke up and she was gone, but sometimes she goes hunting early, and I thought she had, but then I saw-"
no subject
"Come on," she says. "Since you probably won't shut up, we're going to the best vantage point so you don't run around on a damaged leg," she points out. "Saw what?" she prompts, as she tries to get him to move instead of just standing there, whining ineffectively.

Peeta has become one of those and even though she hasn't done much of it yet, she decides that today will be one of those days. Walking into the bakery, however, proves that something is not right with him. As she approaches, she keeps herself as calm and relaxed as possible, hoping that whatever it is can be easily fixed.
"Hi, Peeta. You look busy today." He looks busy on most days, but there's something extra about this. "Need a hand?"
no subject
But right now he's just... not capable of being welcoming. Katniss is gone - waking up for a second day in a row with her not there and her things missing has set it in stone. She'd've found a way to leave him a note if she'd left to hunt, they're both aware of how frantic the other would be if they just disappeared, and a note would alleviate some of that. But no note, no clothes - no Katniss. Peeta looks up when Bev walks in, a flicker in his eyes that's unreadable, and then he looks back down to where he's rolling out the dough into a large sheet. "No." A pause. "Thanks."
no subject
“Would you mind if I stayed for a while?” she asks next. “It’s a bit hot outside and the shade is nice.”
If he says no, she’ll honor that, but she hopes he won’t. He seems like he could use a bit of company of some sort and the least she can do is try to help whatever it is that’s bothering him.
no subject
Still, being rude to Bev isn't something Peeta wants to do, even when he's in a muted temper. Aside from the fact that she's just nice, he's still well aware that the more people he has on his side, the better off he and his allies will be, and he can't afford to break a connection now. "There's a couple of tables and chairs in the front if you want to sit down." Because there's definitely none of that in the actual baking area.
no subject
"I won't stay too long," she says. And she certainly doesn't want to be a room away at the moment. Instead she jumps into why she's really decided to stay for a bit longer. "How is everything?"

Today he's out checking the traps he's still able to set in the diminishing river when he sees Peeta a little way downstream. Finnick regularly walks along the riverbanks from one trap to another, and then back towards the bridge in the path that leads back into town. That's what he's doing now, but he's not going to walk past and leave Peeta alone.
He also knows better than to approach a victor without letting them know he's coming, so Finnick's careful to kick some rocks and scuff his boots to make noise as he draws closer to Peeta, but he's still not sure if the younger victor's going to notice, because hie head is down and he looks entirely occupied with something in one of those books he has.
"Hey Peeta," Finnick says, once he's close but not close enough that he looks like he's trying to be any sort of threat, or any more than he immediately is because he happens to be carrying a trident. "I've just been collecting some fish, you want some to take back to the village?"
