They aren't guard dogs for the house as much as herding dogs for the bigger animals. If Vanille decides to take them out of the pen one day, she would rather have some means to keep them all together in the event that something spooks the kirin or separates one of the purple ones from the rest. Having herding dogs around will help her feel more secure with the large herd she's amassing.
"It's a lot like life here," Vanille says thoughtfully. "My village works a lot like this one, except everything is closer together. The houses are all right next to each other and everyone shares everything. We do everything we can to help each other. It's one big family! But... the wildlife is different. Scarier and more dangerous than what I've seen here so far."
Just about everything on Gran Pulse was capable of killing people. The Oerba people were just good at avoiding them when possible or fighting when necessary.
