The apple had poofed and Kat had been tricked.
For the remainder of that day, a friendly ghost trailed a foot or so behind her. It looked a little bit like Casper but with two leaves and an apple stem sticking out of its head. Kat wasn't sure if anyone else could see him but he wasn't hurting her and it was nice to have some.
Sitting on the bank of the river, the pair of them chattered in excited voices. Kat laughed, the sound warm, rare and happy as the ghost wiggled in the water and pretended that it was being eaten by a cute little fish.
"Please stop." Kat held her journal against her knees, her index finger wiping against her eyes to stop the tears that had formed there. Hopefully, others could see the ghost or was it going to look like Kat was talking to herself.
"I'll never get this finished." She exclaimed with a smile. It was hard to be upset at someone when they were working so hard to make you laugh.
"What?" She glanced around, as if to see if someone was playing a trick on her.
'What is that?' Kat thought to herself as she began to fiddle with the wrist device.
Her mouth shaped into a frown as she stood in the kitchen, staring at the app. Was this something new? She was usually good with technology but she wasn't sure what to do with these messages. They didn't seem like they belonged to her.
My name is Kat.
My good friend Circe has vanished from the village.
I have been taking care of her garden and will be providing salves and antidotes to those who need it.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you are in need of assistance.
I can come to you.

CLOSED TO VERGIL @ HOME 48
Moonlight filtered through the open windows, casting reflections of light between the pale walls. Sharp chirps of cicadas and the dangerous coo of an owl filled echoed through the deepening night. The scent of turning leaves and cold filled Kat's nose, shaping her lips into a warm happy smile. They'd have to close up the house soon and collect enough wood to last through whatever horrors winter held for them but tonight was perfect.
She turned her attention back to the book in her lap. The light was dim but she didn't need a lot of light. Kat carefully plucked an herb from the coffee table and positioned it between the books pages. She pressed it tightly, turned a few pages and then repeated the process. She wouldn't be able to keep all of Circe's plants alive but she'd been cataloging them, collecting seeds and transferring what she could inside to keep the plants warm through the winter.
Her legs were bare and stretched along the couch. Kat wore the green dress she'd been given, its long sleeves keeping her warm, and nothing else. It was late. She didn't know the hour but she'd likely send herself to bed soon. There was always work to do in the early morning and Kat found it difficult to sleep with the bright light of the sun streaming through her windows.
A subdued step called her attention from her task and her head rose as a figure appeared into the kitchen. Kat would know that shadow anywhere. "Vergil." Her voice was soft, as if anything louder might disturb the perfect night. Kat placed her book and plants on the small table next to the couch and rose to her feet. "What are you doing up?"

Hearing her voice, Vergil made his way from the kitchen, with a glass of water and moved quietly into the living room towards the otherside of the couch to put distance. "I wasn't asleep, I left for awhile." At least he wasn't spending all of his time in bed like he did the first few days after the bunker. His hair was getting shaggy and his eyes tired by the pale light she was reading from. "Sit, keep at what your doing, but I told you at night its best to read near the stove, the light is better." He finally took a seat, tugging his jacket off and running his hand through his hair. He went days of sleeping to much, or not at all. There was no middle ground anymore.

She brushed her fingers through her hair and sighed. It made her sad to think about Circe, the way the other woman had suddenly disappeared was unsettling after beginning to grow close to her. What if that happened to Vergil? It was silly and bordering on stupidity but Kat still depended on his presence, like a comforting familiar beacon in a hectic unknown world.
She really was an idiot.
"You look tired." It was an offhand remark but Kat couldn't stop it from slipping from her lips.
First Encounter, Yo
It was the routine, more than anything else, that kept her going. She liked having something automatic to do with her hands. Steps to follow, one by one, allowing her mind to drift.
And there was a lot on her mind, to be fair.
The Stark expo. How much longer she could avoid Fucky Darns. Avery's name on the lists. Her conversation on MPD with Bruce. How hot Danny looked without a shirt. And, as always, somewhere in the back of her mind, the nagging feeling that every day she didn't do something to piss off the Overlords was a day of surrendering to them.
She started to peel the last of her potatoes when she heard someone walk in. "What?" she said, looking up. "Did you say something?"
Who the hell is this?
First Encounter, XD
What's happening?
She got a sense of so many different things but Kat wasn't sure what it meant.
"I'm sorry. I- have you noticed anything odd happening?" Maybe this woman had experienced the same thing???

I fucking miss Cheetos...
Humor was, by and large, Sam's last remaining coping mechanism. And it wasn't a particularly good one, she knew. But the fact of the matter was that there was something nagging at her. Maybe she was just tired.
But it was like the other girl was a video that was completely out of sync with its audio somehow.

Sometimes you can only see clearly after everything you knew had been pulled away.
"I'm not sure what it is…" Kat frowned and stared at Sam. There was something between them, like a spark but different. It was wordier and filled with things that Kat didn't have a context for. "You're not speaking right now?" There was a pause but Kat still heard it and now that she'd heard Sam's voice, she recognized it.
This was really weird.

Fuck, I hope this isn't some kind of Escape to Witch Mountain scenario. I do NOT have the energy to deal with this. But that would be so like the Overlords, wouldn't it? Fuckers.
A scowl had settled across Sam's face. Kind of deeper than her resting bitch face. But only marginally so.
"Do I know you?"

Do you need any help with the medicines? I don't know much but I'd be honored to learn.
no subject
[She'd be more broken up if it'd been Vergil who vanished.]
I don't need help right now. With the winter coming I'm trying to harvest seeds and bring some of the plants inside. It isn't really medicine related but the cold air has begun to make the plants wilt.
I don't want them to die.

With limited resources and the possible winter, I don't want to waste it.
I can start getting notes together for you to review for right now.
no subject
I would be grateful for such notes, if it won’t take too much of your time. I suppose I can find a book to that effect in the library if you’re too busy.

Trick or Treat
She took a brief detour when she heard Kat laugh.
"Glad you're having fun," she commented wryly. Her ghost peered over her shoulder, clearly more afraid of Kat and her ghost than he was of Steph.
Trick or Treat
"What are you doing here?" she didn't laugh all that often and it felt strange being caught in the act.
The ghost, having noticed that something else was happening, stopped his joke and floated over to Kat's side to inspect this new comer. He hadn't gotten to meet many of Kat's friends yet and he was a curious creature.

"I don't think I've ever seen you laugh that hard. I was trying to ditch my shadow," she explains, jerking a thumb in the direction of the now actively cowering from the strangers.
"Something about crossing running water, or something. I dunno."
no subject
"I don't think I've ever laughed that hard before." The friendly ghost knew how to tickle her funny bone.
"Why don't you like him?"

continued
Now she knocked on the door, ready and eager to learn.
continued!
"Come in. I'll put on some tea." She had a lot of tea and other herbs thanks to Circe's garden.
no subject
"And you must be Kat. Tea sounds lovely, thank you." She followed the other girl inside, looking for a place to set her books down.
no subject
She brought over a glass and handed it over to Natalia.
"Here. I have some of my notes here as well. If you'd like to take a look. I've been pressing some of the flowers into the pages as well as collecting seeds for next year." Not that Kat wants to be here that long.
