He hadn't been around when Peeta had found Katniss gone, but Finnick had found out soon enough, between taking fish to Peeta and Johanna and his attempts to keep aware of what's going on in the village. It means that watching out for Peeta is now a task shared only by Finnick and Johanna, and it's one Finnick intends to take seriously. He owes it to Katniss, to the revolution, and to Peeta.

Today he's out checking the traps he's still able to set in the diminishing river when he sees Peeta a little way downstream. Finnick regularly walks along the riverbanks from one trap to another, and then back towards the bridge in the path that leads back into town. That's what he's doing now, but he's not going to walk past and leave Peeta alone.

He also knows better than to approach a victor without letting them know he's coming, so Finnick's careful to kick some rocks and scuff his boots to make noise as he draws closer to Peeta, but he's still not sure if the younger victor's going to notice, because hie head is down and he looks entirely occupied with something in one of those books he has.

"Hey Peeta," Finnick says, once he's close but not close enough that he looks like he's trying to be any sort of threat, or any more than he immediately is because he happens to be carrying a trident. "I've just been collecting some fish, you want some to take back to the village?"
