He was pretty sure that everything about lying on a beach in Dieppe had been a dream, but the cloud was still uncertain. He knew all about what some poisonous gases could do to a person and if it had been gas, it seemed like he should either be in much more pain or dead. Yet here he lay, unable to lift his arms more than an inch off the bed under his own power but still able to think and breathe. It probably hadn't been gas.
