"I usually wield a bastard sword," Jon said. "Rarely a shield, usually just the two handed sword and hope for the best. I'm a keen eye with a bow, as well, which has proven more useful here than the sword."

No weapons save for those bows, after all, and Jon didn't know how they would deal with an enemy that got past their perimeter without some sort of hand to hand weapons. It was something to consider - they needed a palisade, of some sort, or a moat. Perhaps both.
