And that makes sense. That makes a hell of a lot more sense than he wants to admit. He hadn't seen the thing directly up close - his house is near, but not that near - but he'd heard it, heard the shriek of pain and the destruction of the building. It said a lot about his life that that wasn't anywhere near the worst sound he'd ever heard, but it had certainly set his teeth on edge in a way few other disasters ever had, since the agony of the ...thing had been partially human. It's a lot different listening to the pain of a person amplified over a hundred times than any building collapsing or explosion going off.

The wreck of the schoolhouse does look a lot like the destruction that's left when a twister passes through a building. It looks like the building imploded, more or less. "It's not something that's fun to go through, either way."
