While a small community certainly wasn't how New York was, it was how Shadowhunters were. Everyone knew each other, which meant everyone knew of each family's black sheep, each family's heroes. They knew of every disgrace and every accomplishment. Everyone knew of Clary Fairchild, her mother leaving the community, her father being Valentine. Everyone knew, now, that Jace had the same story. Soon, everyone would know of her disgraces, too.

Small communities were both awful and wonderful for the same reasons. At least in this one, she's afforded the opportunity to make a fresh start. No yin-fen, no vampire venom. No impurities.

"Sort of," she answers, watching twigs and leaves float over the surface of the water. "But New York always had everything I needed. Shopping and parties and my family."
