Isabelle returns the smile gently, even though she's not sure if assimilating is really a good thing. Assimilating implies that she's going to be here for awhile, and she's really, really hoping (beyond hope, she thinks, at this point) that that won't be the case. For awhile, she'll just have to go with the flow. Get a feel for things before trying to throw herself full force into getting out.
