Newt only has a limited recollection of their meeting, though it was memorable. It was what had, in part, assisted in Newt's realization of their being something terribly wrong with the Director Graves he met in New York.
He never went into the war with a desire to be a hero, or anything at all really. There had been a desire to use creatures, and Newt has very particular talents. The kind of talents that made it seem as if he had tamed the untamable in the case of dragons. Which is frankly a very silly thing to think.
