Nundu's not too far-fetched a description, all things considered. Graves is admittedly cat-like, graceful and deadly, and Newt's response is a curious thing. Theseus never told him how intently his younger brother seems to shun the company of others, and their first meeting a lifetime ago hadn't betrayed that trait.
Then again, you don't quite know all that much about someone when you know them in fleeting snapshots, even if the young man he'd met then had been fiercely brave in his own way. He's not the war hero Theseus is; but then again, nobody is the war hero that Theseus is.
Graves, however, finds himself intrigued by that particular mind. Newton might be eccentric, but he's obviously very intelligent and quick on the uptake -- traits that immediately capture his attention. He's aware of the patterns in this village, of course; but Graves recognises talent when he sees it, and Newt is one he doesn't pass up.
