Credence did come close. Sam really wasn't pulling punches, but it wasn't like he was an expert at this game. It was just one other way he'd learned to pass the time when he'd been deployed or how to stay out of trouble in school. Teachers didn't think you were a trouble maker if they caught you playing chess a few times. He groans when Credence manages to take a few pieces, but it's all in good fun and his disappointment is followed by praise that Credence caught on to Sam's openings.
It was a good game and fun and that was all that mattered to Sam.
He's actually almost reluctant to call the match, but he knows he has Credence's in check mate and the king is his. Oh well, every thing has to come to an end eventually. He laughs, "Of course not. A game wouldn't be fun that way. Besides, you hold your own in chess pretty well. You did good and that was certainly one of the longer games I've played."
He then adds, for good measure, "But you're welcome. We'll have to play again sometime."
