The moment Cougar springs off him, Jake lets himself curl up with a pained little whimper, pain rolling over him in horrible, red-hot waves as he breathes doggedly through clenched teeth. He's been kicked in the nuts before, he knows all he has to do is breathe and the pain will dissipate soon enough.
