This other man that Carlos apparently is seems so much more worldly. He has a boyfriend, he has friends, and he helps them. He hunts and teaches English and he seems clever and cool. He is a man that Carlos would look up to and want to be, so why can't he just be that man? "Tell me about me," he says carefully, worriedly. "Am I a good man?"

He's the kind of man who asks for a great knife. He has to hope that the reasons he's asking for it are good and not because some twisted version of him has gone down the wrong path.
