If there's any adult who's going to understand, it would be her, but he's got no way of knowing that, does he? As it stands, she waits patiently for him to determine his answer--or, rather, to answer whatever question he's asking himself silently as he considers both her and his response. Her own is perfectly conversational, eyes focused downward on her work, on making sure the stitches are small and neat. The patch will be more durable that way.
