Bruce tended to keep everyone at arm's length, most of the time, which makes it difficult to get in close enough to break through walls and get to know someone. Jason's a lot like him in that respect, though good luck ever getting him to admit it. For Jason, it's a survival strategy he's learned and refined over the years, though he's still willing to try to let the right people in sometimes, as evidenced from his conversations with Steph.

But he doesn't have to ask why she'd give that up in favor of being Robin, because he remembers how thrilling it felt to put on those colors for the first time: This is the best day of my life.
