She gave him a wry smile, grateful that he wasn’t giving up on her just yet. In time, he probably would. Everyone inevitably did. They got their fill of Sam’s attitude and washed their hands of her. They left. Even someone as Zen as Danny eventually would. But at least not yet. So. That was cool. Kinda.
“The funny thing is, I was always the top of my class. With science. Math. Even fucking gym. I could always figure shit out right away. I led the pack.” Not always being the smartest person in the room was still an art she hadn’t gracefully managed yet.
Sam picked a blade of grass, tying it into a ring around her finger. “I’m not good at failing.”
