Jude shakes his head; he's explaining poorly, though it isn't his fault there are only poor explanations for everything at-hand. "The fountain's just water," he says. Jude's explanations, when he bothers to give them, seem to take to heart the idea of building a thing from scratch by first inventing the universe: perhaps if he spoke at enough length, or someone had the patience to listen, he would very thoroughly make the point.
