If anything, that seems to break Elena out of her darker thoughts, the corner of her mouth lifting in a partial smile.

"It's not your fault."

It's something she's sure Sam is aware of, that she's just trying in some way to be empathetic, but Elena doesn't want anyone feeling bad for her. Life wasn't fair, after all.

"It doesn't matter right now anyway. I'm here, and I'm still alive, and that means there's still things I can do."

She didn't want to completely lose hope.
