Cougar will be able to hunt whatever he needs to, so starvation isn't a problem. He's willing to share too, of course, but it's better if there's some bartering involved that gets him something in return. "Are you hungry now?" he asks, his own stomach having been sated by the berries he'd found, but he's willing to go out for a longer hunt, if necessary.
